Lawes Off to a 2-0 Start in the Trials
![]() Manitoba's Kaitlyn Lawes (Photo: Curling Canada/Andrew Klaver) defeated Alberta's Selena Sturmay 8-7 to move to an early 2-0 record at the Canadian Olympic Curling Trials in Halifax, Nova Scotia. By Connor Simms, #19 World-Ranked Kaitlyn Lawes with Selena Njegovan at third, Jocelyn Peterman and Kristin MacCuish on the front end, look to use their experience to excel this week. At the end of last season and for the start of this season, this team made a slight change to their lineup. Selina took over the skipping duties, leaving Kaitlyn sweeping and throwing the fourth stones. So far, these changes have yielded improved results, with the team qualifying for the playoffs in three of their six events. Most notably, winning the Saville Grand Prix and getting themselves back into the slams. This week, these top Canadian teams are competing in the Canadian Olympic Trials for a spot in the Milano Cortina Olympic Games. The four players were all in the 2021 Olympic Trials final in Saskatoon. Selena and Kristin played with skip Tracy Fleury, while Kaitlyn and Jocelyn played with skip Jennifer Jones, winning the gold. Lawes looks to get to her fourth straight Olympic Games. Selena and Kristin look to get to the Games for the first time. Jocelyn will already be going in the Mixed Doubles discipline but will look to return for the second straight time in the four-person. This year's Olympic Trials have a bit of a different format. It is an 8-team 7-game round robin with the first seed going directly to the finals, while the 2nd and 3rd seeds face off in the semi-final. The finals will then have a best-of-three series to declare the champion. In their opening game this week, they defeated Corryn Brown of British Columbia 7-4. In their second game, they took on Alberta's Selena Sturmay. Sturmay won the opening game, drawing to the button for the hammer. Lawes started hot, forcing Sturmay to one in the first end, then getting four in the second, and a steal in the third end. Sturmay got back on the board with one in the fourth and a steal of one in the fifth end. After trading singles in the sixth and seventh, Sturmay tied the game back up with a steal of two in the eighth end. After trading singles in the ninth and tenth ends, it was forced to an extra end where Lawes squeaked out her single point for the 8-7 victory. In their next game, they will face Nova Scotia's Christina Black tonight at 7:00 pm Atlantic time (AT). On Monday, they face Manitoba's Kerri Einarson at 2:00 pm AT. They will have a two-game day on Tuesday against Manitoba's Kate Cameron at 9:00 am AT and Ontario's Rachel Homan at 7:00 pm AT. In their final round-robin game, they will face Alberta's Kayla Skrlik at 2:00 pm AT on Wednesday. Catch the action on TSN with live score updates on the CurlingZone website. |
