Lawes leaves Tahoe on winning note
![]() Winnipeg's Kaitlyn Lawes (Photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) will head to the Olympic Trials in Halifax with winning momentum. By: Cameron Sallaj A difficult week in Tahoe ended on a high for Kaitlyn Lawes and her Winnipeg based team of Selena Njegovan, Jocelyn Peterman and Kristin Gordon. After suffering three consecutive losses which resulted in their elimination, the team faced Japan's Momoha Tabata on Friday. A defensive start saw the two rinks trade singles through the first two ends. Lawes then took control of the scoreboard by stealing two in the third end to open up a 3-1 lead. Tabata cut into the deficit with one in four, but continued to trail by one heading to the second half. In five, Lawes converted another deuce giving themselves full control. Still with three ends to go, however, Tabata's fourth stone thrower Miku Nihira kept things interesting with a precise takeout through a port to count two and tighten the score 5-4. The Canadian side then took one in the seventh to lead by two coming home but it was Tabata who retained the final stone. With an angle double takeout for the potential victory, Nihira was only able to remove one Lawes counter. She scored one, but it was not enough as the Manitoba rink recorded the 6-5 win and earned $4,000 for the match. After struggling through the 2024-25 season and falling out of the Grand Slam circuit, Team Lawes have moved up to #17 in the world and are on the bubble of qualifying for the next Slam. In their second event, the team won the Saville Grand Prix, earning them a big 47.25 points to boost them up the rankings. They also reached the quarterfinals at the Saville Shootout and AMJ Masters Tier 2. With the Olympic Trials scheduled as their next event, Team Lawes will be looking to build on their win in Tahoe and have a strong week in Halifax. Currently, they are the third ranked team in the field with both Christina Black (#26) and Kayla Skrlik (#28), who were initially ahead of them, struggling in the first half of the season. Also in the field are Rachel Homan (#1), Kerri Einarson (#8), Kate Cameron (#20), Corryn Brown (#24) and Pre-Trials winner Selena Sturmay (#32). Following the loss to Lawes, Team Tabata were eliminated at 1-3. The next draw from the KIOTI GSOC Tahoe gets underway at 3:30 PM PT with Kerri Einarson and Satsuki Fujisawa set for the Sportsnet featured game.
