![]() Alberta's Selena Sturmay defeated British Columbia's Kayla MacMillan 8-5 in the opening game of the Canadian Olympic Pre-Trials in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. By Connor Simms, The squad coming out of Edmonton with Selena Sturmay with Danielle Schmiemann at third, Dezaray Hawes and Paige Papley on the front end brought themselves on egame closer to booking their spot in the Olympic Trials. They finished the round robin with a 5-2 record, which was good enough for first place. In their opening game, Sturmay defeated Krista Scharf (Thunder Bay, NO) 7-3, then won 8-3 against Beth Peterson (Winnipeg, MB). Sturmay went on to lose 10-5 against Myla Plett (Edmonton, AB). Sturmay responded with a 7-6 win over Nancy Martin (Wakaw, SK). Sturmay won 11-5 against Ashley Thevenot (Saskatoon, SK), then won 10-2 against Kayla MacMillan (Victoria, BC). Sturmay went on to lose 9-8 against Danielle Inglis (Ottawa, ON) in their final qualifying round match. With their first-place finish, they got a direct bye to the final. They then faced off with Kayla MacMillan's rink out of Victoria in the final. Curling Canada introduced a new best-of-three format used for the Trials/Pre-Trials Finals. Starting with the hammer, Sturmay got on the board with a single in the second after a blank in the first end. Both teams traded deuces in the third and fourth ends. Sturmay added a steal in the fifth end. MacMillan tied the game in the sixth end. The game was broke open with a big three points in the seventh end from Sturmay. They then traded singles in the eighth and ninth ends. Ultimately, Sturmay ran MacMillan out of stones in the tenth to claim an 8-5 victory. Sturmay will now have two chances to claim their spot in the Canadian Olympic Trials in Halifax in November. Game 2 will happen at 7:00 pm Atlantic Time (AT).
