Marie. By Connor Simms, The Winnipeg-based squad, with Reid Carruthers skipping, features B.J. Neufeld at third, and Catlin Schneider and Connor Njegovan on the front end, bounced back after a tough game Wednesday evening. At the Henderson Metal Fall Classic presented by Kioti Tractors of Ontario in Sault Ste. Marie, they had an up-and-down opening day. After controlling the whole game against Jonathan Beuk, winning 7-4, Carruthers had a rough night losing to Joel Retornaz (Trentino, ITA) 8-1, knocking them down to the B-side. In draw 5, they took on Evan Van Amsterdam (Edmonton, AB) in their next game. Carruthers won the opening game, drawing to the button for hammer. Carruthers scored 3 in the first end, then added a steal in the second end. Van Amsterdam scored a single in the third end, Carruthers responded in the fourth end, scoring 3 for the 7-1 win. In other draw 5 action, Marco Hoesli (Glarus, SUI) defeated Nathan Young (St. John's, NL) 5-1, Shinya Abe(Sapporo, JPN) defeated Jonathan Beuk (Kingston, ON) 4-3, Chase Sinnett (Chaska, MN) defeated Michael Fournier (Toronto, ON) 8-5, Alex Champ (Toronto, ON) defeated Jordan Chandler (Little Current, NO) 6-1 and Jongduk Park (Ganwon, KOR) defeated JC Beecroft(Sault Ste. Marie, NO) 9-0. In draw 6, the A-qualifiers will happen between Matt Dunstone (Winnipeg, MB) vs Daniel Casper (Chaska, MN) and John Epping (Sudbury, NO) vs Joel Retornaz (Trentino, ITA). The other two games will be elimination games between Champ vs Sandy MacEwan (Sudbury, NO) and Park vs Dustin Kalthoff (Saskatoon, SK). These will happen at 7:30 pm Eastern Time (ET).
