By Connor Simms, #1 World-Ranked Rachel Homan with Tracy Fleury at third, Emma Miskew and Sarah Wilkes on the front end, remains dominant on the scene in Curling Canada events. Homan was at the PointsBet Invitational this week, looking to win their third title in a row. They went 4-0 in their pool. They defeated Manitoba's Beth Peterson 8-6 and Manitoba's Kaitlyn Lawes 8-3. Their final two wins were against Alberta's Myla Plett, 12-4 and Nova Scotia's Christina Black, 9-5. This set up a match with the other 4-0 team, British Columbia's Corryn Brown, in the final. Brown's squad consists of Erin Pincott at third, Sarah Koltun and Samantha Fisher on the front end. They defeated Alberta's Selena Sturmay 9-4, Manitoba's Kerri Einarson 13-5, Alberta's Kayla Skrlik 10-5 and Manitoba's Kate Cameron 7-6. Homan won the opening draw to the button for the hammer. After blanks in the first two ends, Homan opened the scoring, making a lightweight takeout for one. Homan then got back-to-back steals after BRown missed a tap for a possible two and a double for a potential three.. Brown got on the board with a draw to the eight-foot for one in the sixth end. Homan remained in control, making a double for their deuce in the seventh end. Brown is unable to find a deuce in the eighth, settling for their single with a draw to the eight-foot. It was handshakes in the ninth end after Homan made a double for one to take the 6-2 victory. This marks Homan's second event win on the season, winning the AMJ Masters in London, Ontario, last weekend. Homan grabs their third straight PointsBet Invitational. Also, they take home the $45 000 prize pool, adding on an additional $10 000 in round robin victories. Homan has not lost a game at a Curling Canada event since the 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Additionally, they have not missed a major (Grand Slam of Curling event, World Championship, or Scotties Tournament) final since the 2024 Players Championship. Their next event is the Grand Slam of Curling Tour Challenge in Nisku, Alberta, from October 14-19. |
