Einarson Bounces Back in Calgary
![]() Manitoba's Kerri Einarson (Photo: Curling Canada) defeated Manitoba's Kate Cameron 8-3 to stay alive at the PointsBet Invitational in Calgary, Alberta. By Connor Simms, #6 World-Ranked Kerri Einarson with Val Sweeting at third, Shannon Birchard, Karlee Burgess and Krysten Karwacki on the front end are looking to find their groove with the set lineup. Einarson had a very promising start with their new lineup, winning the Saville Shootout in early September. However, last week at the AMJ Masters, they went 1-3, missing the playoffs. This week, they are at the PointsBet Invitational. Last season at this event, they lost in the first round of the single elimination format to Nova Scotia's Ally Macnutt. This is the first season of the new format for this event. With the Olympic year and Trials approaching, the seven pre-qualified teams will attend the PointsBet Invitational. The next team in is the next best CTRS team (Manitoba's Beth Peterson). Following that, Canada's NextGen U27 qualifier (Alberta's Selena Sturmay) qualified. The final team is the reigning Canadian Junior Champion (Alberta's Myla Plett). The field was reduced to ten teams this year, down from sixteen in previous years. The ten teams will be split into two groups of five, with each team playing every other team in their group once. The top two teams from each group will then advance to the championship game. The event also introduced a new payout structure for these teams. Previously, there was a payout per game won, depending on the round in which it was won. This season, each team will earn $2,500 per round-robin victory. The winners of the men's and women's events will each receive $35,000, while the runners-up will get $15,000. In their opening game, Einarson lost to British Columbia's Corryn Brown in a blowout of 13-5. With the format of the event, Einarson basically needs to win out to have a chance at the final. In their second game, they took on Manitoba's Kate Cameron. Cameron's squad consists of Briane Harris at third, Taylor McDonald and Mackenzie Elias on the front end. Cameron won the opening draw to the button for the hammer. Einarson found the steal of one in the first end. Both teams then traded singles until the fifth end, when Einarson took two and the 5-2 lead. Cameron was then forced in the sixth end. Then in the seventh and eighth ends, Einarson took two and stole two to win 8-3. Their next game will be against Alberta's Selena Sturmay at 1:30 pm Mountain Time (MT) on Friday. In their final round robin game, they will take on Alberta's Kayla Srlik at 6:30 pm MT on Saturday. Catch the action live on TSN. Also, watch the linescores on the CurlingZone website. |
