Lawes Off to a Winning Start in Calgary

Manitoba's Kaitlyn Lawes (photo: Curling Canada) defeated Nova Scotia's Christina Black 8-3 to secure their first win at the PointsBet Invitational in Calgary, Alberta.

By Connor Simms,

#16 World-Ranked Kaitlyn Lawes with Selena Njegovan now calling the game, throwing third, Jocelyn Peterman and Kristin Gordon on the front end are off to a hot start to the season.

Lawes has made three straight playoff appearances to begin the season, including quarterfinal finishes at the Saville Shootout and the AMJ Masters Tier 2. They also won the Saville Shootout earlier this month.

They also earned their right back into the Grand Slam of Curling Tier 1 events. Announced earlier today that they are part of the 16-team field at the CO-OP Tour Challenge in Nisku, Alberta, from October 14-19.

This week, they are at the PointsBet Invitational. This is a Curling Canada-hosted event, marking the fourth consecutive year. However, this is the first season of the new format for this event.

With the Olympic year and Trials approaching, the seven pre-qualified teams will attend the PointsBet Invitational. The next team in is the next best CTRS team (Manitoba's Beth Peterson). Following that, Canada's NextGen U27 qualifier (Alberta's Selena Sturmay) qualified. The final team is the reigning Canadian Junior Champion (Alberta's Myla Plett).

The field was reduced to ten teams this year, down from sixteen in previous years. The ten teams will be split into two groups of five, with each team playing every other team in their group once. The top two teams from each group will then advance to the championship game.

The event also introduced a new payout structure for these teams. Previously, there was a payout per game won, depending on the round in which it was won. This season, each team will earn $2,500 per round-robin victory. The winners of the men's and women's events will each receive $35,000, while the runners-up will get $15,000.

In their opening game, Lawes took on Nova Scotia's Christina Black. Black won the opening game, draw to the button for the hammer.

In the first end, Black was forced to a single after missing the draw to the four-foot for two. Lawes followed with a miss in the second, failing the tap for their second point. In the third end, Black missed the draw on her last stone, allowing the opponents to steal two. Black found the right weight in the fourth end, taking one point with a draw to the button.

After a blank in the fifth end, a flash on Black's last stone resulted in a hit and stick for two for Lawes. Lawes maintained the momentum with a steal of two after Black wrecked on a top-four stone trying to draw for their single. Black was forced to their single in the eighth, making the hit and stick. Lawes added one more in the ninth, making the hit and stick for one, which led to handshakes and the 8-3 victory.

In their next game, Lawes will take on Ontario's Rachel Homan at 6:30 pm Mountain Time (MT). On Friday, they will face Plett at 1:30 pm MT. They will wrap up the round robin on Saturday against Peterson at 1:30 pm MT.

In another draw 2 action, British Columbia's Corryn Brown defeated Manitoba's Kerri Einarson 13-5, Saskatchewan's Mike McEwen defeated Ontario's Sam Mooibroek 10-4, Alberta's Kevin Koe defeated Alberta's Brad Jacobs 6-5, and Homan defeated Peterson 8-6.
