By Connor Simms, #1 World-Ranked Rachel Homan with Tracy Fleury at third, Emma Miskew and Sarah Wilkes on the front end, continue their dominance on the curling tour. After missing the finals for the first time since the 2023-2024 season last weekend, Homan wasted no time getting back. This week, they are at the AMJ Masters in London, Ontario. Homan lost the final to Sweden's Anna Hasselborg last season. This season, Homan went 4-0 in the round robin. In their opening game, they defeated Alberta's Kayla Skrlik 7-4. Homan then defeated Sweden's Iasbella Wrana 6-5 and Sayaka Yoshimura 7-3. Homan wrapped up the round robin with an 8-7 win over Rui Wang. In the quarter-finals, Homan defeated Japan's Momoha Tabata 6-4 in an extra end. In the semi-final, they defeated Wrana once again 7-5. This set up a match with a familiar opponent, #2 World-Ranked Silvana Tirinzoni. Last season alone, they faced off in four finals. Tirinzoni started with the hammer due to their perfect round robin record (4-0, 12 points). No mistake from the Homan back end in the first end, leading to Tirinzoni being forced to their single, making the hit and stick. Homan was unsuccessful in generating offensive opportunities in the second end, ultimately drawing to the eight-foot circle for a single point. In the third end, Homan applied significant pressure on Tirinzoni, preventing a score. Tirinzoni was forced to play a tap, resulting in a one-point steal. Tirinzoni controlled the fourth end, adding two points, making the draw to the paint. Homan quickly responded with two in the fifth end, making a draw through the port to the four-foot. Homan stole two points in the sixth end, breaking the game open after Tirinzoni missed a draw attempt against four. Homan played a perfect seventh end, forcing Tirinzoni to their single point. Tirinzoni was unable to sit two for Homan's last, resulting in a 6-4 victory for Homan. This marks the sixth grand slam of curling title for this version of Team Homan. Rachel and Emma both claim their 18th slam title, both passing Jennifer Jones and solidifying their spot as the most slam victories. Tracy now moves to eight grand slam wins, while Sarah gets her seventh. The next event for Homan is the Pointsbet Invitational in Calgary, Alberta, starting on October 1st. Homan is the defending champion of this event. |
