By Connor Simms, #5 World-Ranked Matt with Colton Lott at third, E.J. Harnden and Ryan Harnden on the front end, were on fire in London. Last season at the Masters, they lost the semi-final to Scotland's Ross Whyte, who then went on to claim the title. On top of all of that, they lost two other semi-finals at the slams. This season, they were looking to break through that drought. This week, the team participated in the inaugural Grand Slam event of the season, the AMJ Masters. Dunstone went 3-1 through the round robin. In their opening game, they defeated Minnesota's Korey Dropkin 6-4, then won 6-3 against Magnus Ramfjell. They then won 7-3 over Saskatchewan's Mike McEwen. In their final round robin match, they lost 8-6 to Switzerland's Yannick Schwaller. In the quarter-finals, Dunstone defeated Ramfjell 6-3. In the semi-final, they defeated Alberta's Brad Jacobs 6-5 in an extra end. This set up a final with Scotland's Ross Whyte. The Whyte squad consists of Robin Brydone at third, Craig Waddell and Euan Kyle on the front end Whyte started with the hammer due to having a perfect round robin record (4-0). In the first end, Whyte seemed to have an easy deuce brewing, but on Matt's last, he made a thin double to force the blank. Dunstone locked a freeze on a buried Whyte stone, and WHyte was unable to remove it, resulting in a steal of one. Whyte decided to play a double for the blank in the third end, but they ended up jamming the rock, resulting in a steal of one for Dunstone. Whyte took the lead in the fourth end, making a light-weight hit for three points for the 3-2 lead. A limited number of stones in play led to a blank in the fifth end, with Dunstone maintaining the hammer. Dunstone capitalized with the fifth end blank, getting their deuce in the sixth end, making the open hit and stick. Failing to get rocks in play, Whyte got the blank to take the hammer into the eighth end down one. Whyte was forced in the eighth end, making a 12-foot runback to push it to the extra end. Dunstone controlled the whole extra end, ultimately picking out Whyte's stone on their last to win 6-4. This marks the first slam win for this version of Team Dunstone. Matt secures his first title since 2019. Colton is set to claim his inaugural Grand Slam title. EJ will achieve his tenth Slam title, while Ryan will secure his eighth. Dunstone's next event will be at the PointsBet Invitational in Calgary, Alberta, starting on October 1st. |
