Tirinzoni Wins Battle of Switzerland

By Connor Simms, #2 World-Ranked Sivana Tirinzoni as skip, throwing third stones with Alina Paetz throwing the last stones, Carole Howald and Selina Witschonke on the front end, continue to look strong this season. Tirinzoni opened their season with a perfect 6-0 record at the Women's Masters Basel, winning the title. This week, they are at the AMJ Masters in London, Ontario. Last season at the Masters, Tirinzoni lost in the quarter-finals to Rachel Homan. Tirinzoni finished 4-0 in the 16-team qualifying round. In their opening game, Tirinzoni defeated Rui Wang (Beijing, CHN) 5-4, then won 7-3 against Momoha Tabata and 8-3 against Satsuki Fujisawa (Kitami, JPN). Tirinzoni then won 5-4 against Sayaka Yoshimura (Sapporo, JPN) in their final qualifying round match. They then faced Country rival Xenia Schwaller in the quarter-finals. Tirinzoni started with the hammer due to their better round robin record. After a blank in the first end, Tirinzoni was forced to their single, making the hit and stick. Schwaller was forced to their single point in the third, making the open hit and stick. In the fourth end, Tirinzoni made a light-weight tap for the first deuce of the game. In the fifth end, Schwalller was forced to their single point with a draw to the eight-foot. Tirinzoni got one in the sixth end, making an open hit and stick to make it 4-2. After a blank in the seventh end, Schwaller came up clutch to tie the game, with a thin double to force an extra end. Ultimately, Tirinzoni made a tap to the four-foot for the 5-4 victory. In other quarter-final action, Korea's Gim Eun Ji defeated Kim Eunjung 7-0, Sweden's Isabella Wrana defeated Sweden's Anna Hasselborg 8-3, and Ontario's Rachel Homan defeated Japan's Tabata Momoha 6-4. In the semi-finals, Tirinzoni will face Gim at 7:30 pm Eastern Time (ET). In the other semi-final, Wrana will face Homan. Catch all of the games live on the Rock Channel.
