Barb Spencer wins The Sunova Spiel at East St. Paul


Barb Spencer (Winnipeg, MB) wins the The Sunova Spiel at East St. Paul, defeating Rhonda Varnes (Winnipeg, MB) 8-2 at the East St. Paul Curling Club in Winnipeg, Canada. Spencer with Katie Spencer at third, Holly Spencer and Allyson Spencer on the front end take home the $2,600CDN first place cheque along with 24.127 world ranking points, while Varnes receives $1,800CDN and 18.957 world ranking points for their second place finish.

Starting with hammer, Spencer scored 2 in the first end, then forced Varnes to a single in the second end. Spencer scored 3 in the third end, forced Varnes to a single in the fourth end to lead 5-2 at the break after Spencer scored 3 in the fifth end for early handshakes and the 8-2 win.

In the semifinals, Spencer defeated Tiffany McLean (Brandon, MB) 7-5 and Varnes defeated Shannon Birchard (Winnipeg, MB) 7-2. McLean and Birchard earned $1,200CDN and 14.649 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Spencer defeated Terry Ursel (Eden, MB) 10-3, Varnes defeated Darcy Robertson (Winnipeg, MB) 9-7 in an extra end, while McLean defeated Briane Meilleur (Winnipeg, MB) 8-3 and Birchard defeated Jennifer Clark-Rouire (Winnipeg, MB) 6-2. Robertson, Meilleur, Clark-Rouire and Ursel earned $800CDN along with 10.340 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes.

Spencer went 3-1 in the 16 team triple knockout qualifying round. In their opening game, Spencer defeated Cheryl Reed (Brandon, MB) 5-2, won against Clark-Rouire 7-6, then losing the A-Qualifier game to Birchard 7-6. Spencer dropped to the B-Qualifier where they responded with a 9-3 win over McLean to qualify for the playoffs.
