By Connor Simms, #6 World-Ranked Kerri Einarson with Val Sweeting at third, Shannon Birchard, Krysten Karwacki and Karlee Burgess on the front end is kicking off their season at the Saville Shootout in Edmonton. After a season of finding super spares and replacements, Einarson settled on their lineup ahead of the 2025 Olympic Trials season. Birchard returned to the lineup after battling a knee injury last season. They also added Karlee Burgess after she filled in for Birchard. Karwacki also remains with the team after filling in for the previous lead, Briane Harris, during her suspension. In their first game at the Saville Shootout, they ran the lineup with Einarson, Sweeting, Birchard and Burgess. They picked up a win 9-3 over Japan's Yunia Miura. Their second game of the round robin was against Alberta's Jesse Hunkin. This lineup had Sweeting at skip, Birchard at vice, Karwacki at second and Burgess at lead. Einarson sat out. Hunkin started with the hammer, winning the opening draw to the button. In the first end, a missed blank attempt led to Einarson stealing one. Hunkin saw an opportunity for multiple in the second, playing a double on their last, but they were unable to kick out the second stone, settling for their single. Einarson found their deuce in the second end, drawing to the paint. After Hunkin failed to make the hit and stick for one, they gave up another steal of one. A nice shot in the fifth end from Hunkin, making a triple for their first deuce of the game. Einarson got their single point in the sixth, making an open hit and stick. It was handshakes in the seventh after a failed tap attempt, leading to a steal of three. Their next game is against Alberta's Selena Sturmay at 5:30 pm Central Time (CT). They will wrap up the round robin this evening with a game against Chaska's Tabitha Peterson at 9:45 pm CT. The playoffs will continue tomorrow with the top eight teams advancing.
