Martin Ferland wins Challenge Casino de Charlevoix


Martin Ferland (Levis, QC) wins the Challenge Casino de Charlevoix, defeating Stuart Thompson (Dartmouth, NS) 11-5 at the Arena de Clermont in Clermont, Quebec, Canada. Ferland with Francois Roberge at third, Maxime Elmaleh and Jean Gagnon on the front end take home the $8,000CDN first place cheque along with 27.846 world ranking points, while Thompson receives $5,000CDN and 21.879 world ranking points for their second place finish.

Starting with hammer, Ferland scored 3 in the first end, then forced Thompson to a single in the second end. Thompson added a steal in the third end, after Ferland responded in the fourth end scoring 2 to extend the lead to 5-2. Thompson scored 3 in the fifth end to tie the game when Ferland responded in the sixth end scoring 3. then added a steal of 3 in the seventh end for handshakes and the 11-5 win.

In the semifinals, Ferland defeated Chad Stevens (Halifax, NS) 10-7 in an extra end and Thompson defeated Jean-Michel Menard (Gatineau, QC) 7-5. Stevens and Menard earned $3,000CDN and 16.907 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Ferland defeated Francois Gagne (Montreal, QC) 6-5, Thompson defeated Simon Dupuis (Thurso, QC) 7-5, while Stevens defeated Sebastien Robillard (Ottawa, ON) 6-4 and Menard defeated Jean-Sebastien Roy (Chicoutimi, QC) 6-3. Dupuis, Robillard, Gagne and Roy earned $2,000CDN along with 11.934 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes.

Ferland went 3-0 in the 18 team triple knockout qualifying round. In their opening game, Ferland defeated Robillard 7-2, won against Greg Balsdon (Kingston, ON) 7-2, and Stevens 8-4 in the A-Qualifier match to advance to the playoff round.
