Brown beats Carey for third win in Swift Current

Kamloops' Corryn Brown (Photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) is into the B qualifiers at the Western Showdown with a third win Friday night.

By: Cameron Sallaj

Corryn Brown and her team of Erin Pincott, Sarah Koltun and Samantha Fisher are only one win away from qualifying at the RBC Dominion Securities Western Showdown. After dropping their first game, the BC rink won back-to-back games to enter the B semifinals where they faced Winnipeg's Chelsea Carey.

Starting with hammer, a strong first end by her team left Corryn Brown an open hit for three points. However, her throw was a bit wide and rolled out, resulting only in a score of two. She then made up for it in the second end with a steal of one to go ahead by three.

In three, things got better for the BC squad when Chelsea Carey's final draw went heavy, giving them two more points. Carey finally got on the board in four with a draw for one to trail 5-1 at halftime.

Team Brown added to their total with two more points in the fifth end to extend their lead to 7-1. After Carey managed just one in the sixth end it was handshakes with Brown securing a dominant 7-2 win in game four in Swift Current.

RBC Dominion Securities Western Showdown - Draw 8 - Corryn Brown vs Chelsea Carey:

Currently ranked 28th in the world, Team Brown have reached the playoffs in three of eight events this season. They made it to the semifinals of the Curling Stadium Martensville International and the quarterfinals of the Curlers Corner Autumn Gold Curling Classic and the HearingLife Tour Challenge Tier 2. Looking to reclaim the BC Scotties title for the first time since 2020, the team is looking for a strong finish to the 2024 portion of the season.

In the B qualifier, Team Brown will take on Team Kayla MacMillan in what could be a precursor of the provincial final in January. This will be the first time the teams face off this season with the winner taking the edge heading into playdowns for the BC crown.

Meanwhile, Team Carey drops into the last chance C bracket and will play Team Ashley Thevenot Saturday at 2:30 PM CT.
