Sudbury's Team John Epping (Photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) needed an extra end come from behind victory over Calgary's Kevin Koe to open the Western Showdown with a win. By: Cameron Sallaj John Epping and his Sudbury based squad of brothers Jake and Tanner Horgan and Ian McMillan did not get off to the best start in their opening game in Swift Current, however, battled back to take the victory over Kevin Koe in Draw 7. In the first end, the Koe rink of Aaron Sluchinski, Tyler Tardi and Karrick Martin made effective use of last rock advantage, picking out the lone Epping stone in the rings for a big count of three. This put the Ontarians in a hole early, however, with seven ends to comeback. That comeback began immediately in the second end with John Epping drawing the four foot to put two on the board. The team from the Soo then got a surprising miss on Kevin Koe's final double attempt in the third end to steal one and tie the game at three all. The fourth end was controlled by Team Koe who were rewarded in the end with an open hit to count two. This lead did not last for long though, as Team Epping responded with two of their own in five to knot up the score once again. Koe settled for one in the sixth after another missed double takeout attempt. The seventh end saw the Ontario rink take their first lead of the game with a three spot, going ahead by two. This was quickly matched in eight by Koe who made an open hit to count two, sending the game into overtime with Epping holding the final stone. On his final stone, John Epping peeled out one of the two Koe stones remaining in the rings. After a measure, it was confirmed that it was indeed Epping who held shot rock with his team earning a narrow 9-8 win to get started in Swift Current.
