McDonald finished 5-0 in the 20-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, McDonald defeated Brent Pierce (New Westminister, BC) 6-4, then won 8-2 against Scott Dunnam (Philadelphia, PA) and 6-4 against Jacob Libbus (Black Diamond, AB). McDonald won 7-4 against Steve Laycock (Swift Current, SK), then won 9-8 against McEwen in their final qualifying round match.
