Matt Dunstone (Winnipeg, MB) won 7-2 over Mike McEwen (Saskatoon, SK) in the Final of the Astec Safety Challenge, held January 8 - 11 at the Lloydminster Curling Club in Lloydminster, Canada. To advance to the championship game, Dunstone won 7-6 over Niklas Edin (Karlstad , SWE) in the semifinals of the Astec Safety Challenge in Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada; and won 6-5 over Ross Whyte (Stirling, SCO) in the quarterfinals. of the Astec Safety Challenge in Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada;
Dunstone finished 3-0 in the 24-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Dunstone defeated Johnson Tao (Edmonton, AB) 6-3, then won 8-0 against Joel Retornaz (Cembra, ITA) and 8-1 against Yannick Schwaller (Geneve, SUI) in their final qualifying round match.
For winning the Astec Safety Challenge Championship title, Dunstone earned 52.500 world rankings points along with the $35,000CDN first prize cheque. Dunstone move up 2 spots after posting a net gain of 31.5 points improving upon their best 7 results so far this season, ranking 3rd overall with 337.781 total points on the World Ranking Standings. Dunstone ranks 3rd overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 271.875 points earned so far this season.
