Shinya Abe (Sapporo, JPN) finished 3-3 in the 21-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Abe lost 7-3 to Glenn Howard (Penetanguishene, ON), then responded with a 8-3 win over John Shuster (Duluth , MN). Abe won 7-3 against Dylan Johnston (Thunder Bay, NO), then won 12-3 against Sweden's Fredrik Nyman. Abe went on to lose 9-4 against Karsten Sturmay (Edmonton, AB). Abe lost 7-5 to Nathan Young (St. Johns, NL) in their final qualifying round match.

Abe earned 4.500 world rankings points for their preliminary round wins, remaining in 53rd place overall on the World Ranking Standings with a net gain of 3.562 after improving upon their best so far this season. Abe ranks 46th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 30.750 points earned so far this season.
