Karsten Sturmay (Edmonton, AB) finished 3-5 in the 18-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Sturmay defeated Scott Jones (Moncton, NB) 7-3, then went on to lose 10-3 against Brendan Bottcher (Calgary, AB). Sturmay responded with a 7-6 win over Thomas Scoffin (Whitehorse, YK). Sturmay went on to lose 8-5 against Jacques Gauthier (Victoria, BC). Sturmay lost 6-3 to Felix Asselin (Montreal, QC) where Sturmay responded with a 9-4 win over Tyler Smith (Charlottetown , PEI). Sturmay went on to lose 8-3 against Brad Gushue (St. John's, CAN). Sturmay lost 9-8 to Mike McEwen (Toronto, ON) in their final qualifying round match.

Sturmay earned 10.688 world rankings points for their preliminary round wins, remaining in 17th place overall on the World Ranking Standings with a net gain of -0.249 after improving upon their best so far this season.
