Magnusson/Coutts finished 5-1 in the 0-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Magnusson/Coutts defeated Brad Childe/Craig Turnbull (Nanaimo, BC) 5-2, then won 6-4 against Alberta's Ed Willson/Tom Steele. Magnusson/Coutts went on to lose 6-5 against Moe Dube/Al Gauvreau (Oromocto, NB). Magnusson/Coutts responded with a 6-2 win over Jean Lamere/Sylvie Turgeon (Laval-sur-la-Lac, QC). Magnusson/Coutts won 8-4 against Jim Armstrong/Ian Gray (Cambridge, ON), then won 4-3 against Shawn Sherwood/Bob Desnoyers (Regina, SK) in their final qualifying round match.
