Martin Rios (Glarus, SUI) finished 3-3 in the 24-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Rios defeated Ritvars Gulbis (Riga, LAT) 5-2, then won 9-7 against Christian Bangerter (Bern, SUI). Rios went on to lose 9-4 against Alexander Baumann (Baden Baden, GER). Rios lost 8-4 to Amos Mosaner (Trentino, ITA) where Rios responded with a 8-4 win over Bangerter. Rios went on to lose 5-4 against Michael Mueller (Aarau, SUI) in their final qualifying round match.
