John Shuster (Duluth, USA) qualified for the 2017 GSOC Tour Challenge Tier 1 playoffs, dropping their quarterfinals match 10-8 against Brad Jacobs (Sault Ste Marie, ON). of the 2017 GSOC Tour Challenge Tier 1 in Regina, Saskatchewan;

Shuster finished 3-1 in the 15-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Shuster defeated Kevin Koe (Calgary, AB) 5-4, then went on to lose 6-1 against Brad Gushue (St. John's, NL). Shuster responded with a 7-6 win over Peter De Cruz (Geneva, SUI). Shuster won 9-5 against Glenn Howard (Islington, ON) in their final qualifying round match.

Shuster earned 32.027 world rankings points for their Top 5 finish in the GSOC Tour Challenge Tier 1, remaining in 16th place overall on the World Ranking Standings with 227.823 total points. Shuster ranks 9th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 51.144 points earned so far this season.
