John Shuster (Duluth, USA) won 8-7 over Todd Birr (Blaine, MN) in the Final of the USA Men's National Curling Championship, held February 11 - 18, 2017 in Everett, Washington.
Shuster finished 9-0 in the 10-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Shuster defeated Hunter Clawson (Laurel, MD) 9-3, then won 7-3 against Pete Fenson (Bemidji, MN) and 6-5 against Alex Leichter (Boston, MA). Shuster won 5-3 against Heath McCormick (Blaine, USA), then won 7-6 against Stephen Dropkin (Minneapolis, MN) and 8-5 against Craig Brown (Blaine, USA). Shuster won 8-5 against Darryl Sobering (Denver, CO), then won 8-3 against Brady Clark (Seattle, WA) and 7-6 against Birr in their final qualifying round match.
For winning the USA Men's National Curling Championship Championship title, Shuster earned 41.237 world rankings points. Shuster move up 3 spots after posting a net gain of 36.927 points improving upon their best results so far this season, ranking 14th overall with 406.257 total points on the World Ranking Standings. Shuster ranks 24th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 150.183 points earned so far this season.
