Mark Nichols (St. John's, NL) run at the 2016 Challenge de Curling de Gatineau came to an end in the semifinals with a 8-3 loss to Matt Dunstone (Winnipeg, MB). of the 2016 Challenge de Curling de Gatineau in Buckingham, Quebec, Canada; Nichols advanced through the quarterfinals with a 9-4 win over Jordan Chandler (Sudbury, NONT).

Nichols finished 4-0 in the 32-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Nichols defeated Yi Hang Liang (Shanghai, CHN) 12-3, then won 5-4 against Pat Ferris (Grimsby, ON) and 6-2 against Jamie Murphy (Halifax, NS). Nichols won 8-3 against Ryan McCrady (Ottawa, ON) in their final qualifying round match.

Nichols earned 29.686 world rankings points for their Top 3 finish in the Challenge de Curling de Gatineau, remaining in 1st place overall on the World Ranking Standings with 722.850 total points. Nichols ranks 2nd overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 195.207 points earned so far this season.
