To advance to the championship game, Muirhead won 6-3 over Kelsey Rocque (Edmonton, AB) in the semifinals of the 2016 HDF Insurance Shoot-Out in Edmonton, Alberta; and won 7-2 over Chelsea Carey (Calgary, AB) in the quarterfinals.
 
Muirhead finished 5-0 in the 24-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Muirhead defeated Satsuki Fujisawa (Kitami, JPN) 5-4, then won 8-3 against Chantelle Eberle (Regina, SK) and 7-3 against Daniela Driendl (Fuessen, GER). Muirhead won 7-1 against Danielle Schmiemann (Edmonton, AB), then won 6-5 against Gina Aitken (Edinburgh, SCO) in their final qualifying round match.
 
With their runner-up finish at the HDF Insurance Shoot-Out, Muirhead take home 39.559 world rankings points along with the $5,000CDN prize, moving up 1 spots the World Ranking Standings into 6th place overall with 344.708 total points. Muirhead ranks 6th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 39.559 points earned so far this season.
