In their opening game, Messing defeated Edward Scimia (Bridgeport, CT) 12-4, then won 8-7 against Hunter Clawson (Potomac, MD) and 11-7 against Michael Stefanik (Schenectady, NY). Messing won 11-5 against Ivaylo Petrov (Plainfield, NJ), then won 6-4 against Clawson and 7-5 against Martin Sather (Ardsley, NY). Messing won 9-5 against Petrov, then won 9-6 against Sather in their final qualifying round match.
