In their opening game, Spielman lost 11-5 to Leo Johnson (Fairbanks, AK), then responded with a 8-5 win over Greg Gallagher (Tempe, AZ). Spielman won 9-8 against Andrew Stopera (Ardsley, NY), then won 6-4 against Nick Myers (Dallas / Fort Worth, TX) and 6-5 against Greg Wilson (Northbrook, IL). Spielman went on to lose 9-6 against Lyle Sieg (Seattle, WA). Spielman responded with a 6-5 win over Scott Strouse (Midland, MI). Spielman won 9-4 against Tim Gartner (St. Paul, MN). Spielman went on to lose 6-4 against Adam Kitchens (Williston, ND) in their final qualifying round match.
