In their opening game, Carruthers defeated Scott Dunnam (Philadelphia, PA) 9-2, then won 6-4 against Northern Ontario's Trevor Bonot and 5-3 against Brady Clark (Seattle, WA). Carruthers won 7-1 against Craig Brown (Blaine, USA). Carruthers went on to lose 6-3 against Stoughton in their final qualifying round match.
