Sormunen finished 3-2 in the 12-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Sormunen defeated Joyance Meechai (Ardsley, NY) 9-2, then won 7-1 against Shelly Kinney (St. Paul, MN). Sormunen went on to lose 8-2 against Montford. Sormunen lost 7-3 to Minnesota's Lysa Johnson where Sormunen responded with a 9-5 win over Cory Christensen (Blaine, USA) in their final qualifying round match.
 
For winning the St. Paul Cash Spiel Championship title, Sormunen earned 4.000 world rankings points along with the $2,696CDN first prize cheque, moving up 6 spots the World Ranking Standings into 49th place overall with 17.822 total points.
