To advance to the championship game, Howard won 11-6 over Jeff Stoughton (Winnipeg, MB) in the semifinals of the 2009 Canadian Curling Trials in Edmonton, Alberta;
Howard finished 6-1 in the 0-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Howard defeated Stoughton 5-4, then won 6-5 against Wayne Middaugh (Islington, ON) and 6-4 against Jason Gunnlaugson (Beausejour, MB). Howard won 7-4 against Pat Simmons (Davidson, SK), then won 7-6 against Kevin Koe (Edmonton, AB) and 8-6 against Randy Ferbey (Edmonton, AB). Howard went on to lose 8-6 against Martin in their final qualifying round match.
. For week of the event schedule, Howard did not improve upon their best events, remaining at th place on the World Ranking Standings with total points. Howard ranks th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with points earned so far this season.
