Markku Uusipaavalniemi (Helsinki, FIN) finished 2-3 in the 24-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Uusipaavalniemi defeated Rui Liu (Harbin, CHN) 4-3, then went on to lose 6-3 against Kevin Martin (Edmonton, AB). Uusipaavalniemi lost 6-5 to Jon Rennie (Calgary, AB) where Uusipaavalniemi responded with a 6-4 win over Alberta's Tom Appelman. Uusipaavalniemi went on to lose 7-3 against Jim Cotter (Vernon, BC) in their final qualifying round match.
