Russ Howard (Moncton, NB) lost 7-6 to Thomas Ulsrud (Oslo, NOR) in the Final of the Bern Open, held October 16 - 18, 2009 in Bern, Switzerland. To advance to the championship game, Howard won 8-3 over Mark Neeleman (Zoetemeer, NED) in the semifinals of the 2009 Bern Open in Bern, Switzerland; and won 6-1 over Warwick Smith (Perth, SCO) in the quarterfinals. of the 2009 Bern Open in Bern, Switzerland;

Howard finished 4-0 in the 32-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Howard defeated Switzerland's Sven Michel 8-5, then won 6-3 against Patrick Vuille (Glarus, SUI) and 10-6 against Mark Dacey (Halifax, NS). Howard won 5-4 against David Murdoch (Scotland, UK) in their final qualifying round match.

With their runner-up finish at the Bern Open, Howard take home 12.850 world rankings points along with the $7,640CDN prize. For week of the event schedule, Howard did not improve upon their best events, remaining at th place on the World Ranking Standings with total points. Howard ranks th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with points earned so far this season.
