Warwick Smith (Perth, SCO) qualified for the 2009 Bern Open playoffs, dropping their quarterfinals match 6-1 against Russ Howard (Moncton, NB). of the 2009 Bern Open in Bern, Switzerland;

Smith finished 5-2 in the 32-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Smith defeated Switzerland's Kevin Froidevaux 6-3, then won 8-3 against David Sik (Praha, CZE) and 4-3 against Manuel Ruch (Uitikon, SUI). Smith went on to lose 6-5 against Peter Loudon (Perth, SCO). Smith lost 5-3 to Mark Neeleman (Zoetemeer, NED) where Smith responded with a 7-3 win over Switzerland's Sven Michel. Smith won 7-6 against Finland's Markku Uusipaavalniemi in their final qualifying round match.

Smith earned 7.710 world rankings points for their Top 5 finish in the Bern Open. For week of the event schedule, Smith did not improve upon their best events, remaining at th place on the World Ranking Standings with total points. Smith ranks th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with points earned so far this season.
