In their opening game, Merklinger defeated Wayne Middaugh (Toronto, ON) 7-3, then went on to lose 8-3 against Sean Geall (New Westminster, BC). Merklinger responded with a 8-7 win over Jason Larway (Seattle, WA). Merklinger won 7-3 against Dean Ross (Calgary, AB). Merklinger went on to lose 8-4 against Randy Ferbey (Edmonton, AB). Merklinger lost 11-8 to Middaugh in their final qualifying round match.
