Beth Peterson wins Fort Garry Industries Bonspiel


Beth Peterson (Winnipeg, MB) wins the Fort Garry Industries Bonspiel, defeating Katie Chappellaz (Brandon, MB) 5-4. Peterson with Robyn Njegovan at third, Melissa Gordon and Breanne Yozenko on the front end take home the $2,000CDN first place cheque along with 15.313 world ranking points, while Chappellaz receives $1,200CDN and 12.031 world ranking points for their second place finish.

Starting with hammer, Peterson blanked the first 2 ends, got on the board scoring 1 in the third end with Chappellaz responded in the fourth end scoring 2. Peterson scored 2 in the fifth end, then forced Chappellaz to a single in the sixth end, who then added a steal in the seventh end to take a 4-3 lead into the final end. In the 8th end, Peterson made a hit and roll to lie 2 behind guards with her first skip stone, forcing Chappellaz into a runback which only removed one counting stone. Peterson then drew the 8 foot for 2 and the 5-4 win.

In the semifinals, Peterson defeated Maureen Bonar (Brandon, MB) 5-1 and Chappellaz defeated Jennifer Clark-Rouire (Winnipeg, MB) 8-7. Clark-Rouire and Bonar earned $800CDN and 9.297 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Chappellaz defeated Cheryl Reed (Brandon , MB) 8-7 AND Bonar won 5-4 against Meghan Armit (Winnipeg, MB). Armit, Reed earned $600CDN along with 6.563 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes.

Peterson went 4-1 in the 12 team round-robin pools qualifying round. In their opening game, Peterson defeated Reed 9-0, then won against Rachel Burtnyk (Winnipeg, MB) 5-4, before losing their next game to Alyssa Calvert (Carberry, MB) 5-3. Peterson bounced back with a 5-2 win over Bonar, then won against Joelle Brown (Winnipeg, MB) 6-1 in their final qualifying round match.
