By Price Atkinson Las Vegas, Nevada - Niklas Edin improved to 4-0 with an 7-6 win over Scotland, leading the standings at the World Men's Curling Championship at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Edin with Oskar Eriksson, Rasmus Wrana and Christoffer Sundgren got a key win over Bruce Mouat. The Scottish side knocked off Canada yesterday and could have put themselves into the driver's seat for a semifinal bye with the win, but the Swedes were ready for the challenge. Mouat came out strong against Sweden, starting with hammer they scored a single in the first end. After forcing Edin to follow suit, Mouat scored two in the third end, then stole the fourth end for a 4-1 lead. The Swedes came back strong in the fifth end, getting three of their own to tie the game heading into the halfway break. Edin forced Mouat to a single in the sixth end, then took the lead for the first time grabbing two in the seventh end, score now 6-5. Mouat blanked the eighth end, then scored a single in the ninth end to tie the game at six. With Sweden lying two in the tenth end, Mouat came up short on a tough freeze giving Edin the win without having to throw their last. Canada's Brad Gushue rebounded with a 7-2 win over Switzerland's Marc Pfister. Gushue opened with 2 in the first end, then stole two more in the second end. After forcing Pfister to one in the third end, Gushue added 2 more points in the fourth, then stone the fifth end to lead 7-1. Pfister scored a single in the sixth end, but conceded as the five-point deficit was deemed to be unsurmountable. China De Jia Zou improved to 2-1 with a 6-5 win over Germany's Alexander Baumann while Italy's Joel Retornaz got their first win, knocking off Russia's Alexey Timofeev 9-6. Sitting idle in the evening draw, Norway's Steffen Walstad and Korea's Chang-Min Kim improved to 3-0 with draw 4 wins. Action continues Monday morning. |
