Canad Inns Mixed Doubles

Watched the Groff/Jones game. After the 2nd end, not too sure she even made two shots. And Brent could not out curl Doering.

Final score 8 -3. That's gotta hurt.

Bad game? Or are we witnessing the twilight of the curling goddess?

She'll be a spectator in Portage sooner vs later.

As I've stated many times her shot-making has started to erode, some games worse than others.

Combined with her never-changing all-offense (w/ hammer) strategy she continues to expose her team to unnecessary perils.

She's putting all her eggs in one basket - the 2019 STOH and she'll be praying hard Rachel Homan stumbles in Ontario and loses the 1-game Scotties showdown she's been granted.

For the most part this year (even when Einarson got off to a molten-hot start) Homan has been focused, attentive and cruel.

Based on observation last couple years the Final 4 at Scotties should be:

Homan
Casey Scheidegger (once she shakes off her mid-season blues)
Fleury or Einarson
McCarville

Scheidegger probably the only one capable of standing up to Rachel's team - with an outside chance of denying Rachel her 4th STOH title - should Homan falter in a 1-game showdown!

Both.

But when any sports figure has been to the top of the mountain, it's difficult for them to accept the fact they may no longer belong there. So they struggle onandonandon while their fans become moreandmoreandmore uncomfortable.

Even though Jones has been absorbing beatings from lesser players at this event - I think it was important for her to participate. #1 - she's still the biggest draw in women's curling and Manitoba fans don't get to see her play live much anymore. So kudos to Jennifer, a true sportsman, regardless of obvious decline in her mid-40s.

Note that more Jones players are in the mixed vs. Homan players. What does that indicate? Obviously, Rachel is focusing on winning Ontario and keeping her team on the upper plateau it seems to have attained. Rachel, Emma & Lisa decided to skip the mixed in Portage - they could easily have entered teams. Only Joanne Courtney fulfilled her obligation to Reid Carruthers and that team is still alive.

Jones has been pushed aside. Didn't even get to a qualifying game in C event.

Kaitlyn Lawes with the semi-retired firebrand John Morris has qualified despite Morris lack of curling this season.

Jill Officer entered a team - obviously with a relative or friend and was dispensed with even faster than Jones.

Peterman fielded a team. Only Dawn McEwen said enough is enough with Mike and declined entry.

Its a dicey choice whether to play as much as possible, risking burnout or injury. Homan is usually all over most events. But NOT THIS YEAR!

Too bad Lawes did not follow up her success in the Juniors by assembling her own team in 2009.

She would have achieved soo much more.

Kaitlyn wasn't ready to assume full women's skipping duties after her brilliant junior career. Jones had obviously come to loggerheads w/ Cathy O and was looking for a Manitoba-based replacement.

Kaitlyn's early work for Jones was effective, maybe not quite as clutch as Cathy O but overall the team was re-energized - they've won Scotties, Worlds & Olympic titles w/ Kaitlyn in tow.

Now, with Jennifer's game finally showing obvious deterioration the question is how long will Kaitlyn plug on vicing for an obviously ailing Jones? The answer is easy - this year will probably be the last - mainly because Team JJ has the auto-berth at the Scotties. Jones is on an island if she finishes the year poorly and refuses to medal at the STOH.

Sponsorships & the auto-berth will keep them together for 2018-19. Whether Jones has Kaitlyn, Joss & Dawn under contract for future years is another question.

What Jones will NEVER do - she won't elevate Lawes to 4th stones . . . .that would soil Jones' legacy. So they'll plug on.

Its not an Olympic year anyways, nor is it a lead up year. Points are always important but not that much this year.

Can see Kaitlyn cutting herself free from Jones chains next year. One possible team would be Lawes - skip, Peterman - 3rd, Jill Officer 2nd, Dawn - lead.

Although Peterman was a promising skip/3rd in juniors don't know if she's ready (or able) to step up to top level play on the tee.

Kaitlyn hasn't turned 30 yet. Remember, Jones didn't grab her first STOH til she was 30.

Kaitlyn would have her choice of players and/or teams to skip or play 3rd for if Jones folds her cards.

In womens curling there's only a few "movie star" players. Kaitlyn is near top of the list - others obviously include Rachel Homan, Emma Miskew, Princess Eve, JJ (even in her decline), Courtney, Anna Hasselborg, a few more.
