Very good (and due) change format change.

Heads must have been scratchin' about loss of hotel revenues for 2 less teams at rural venues but this shouldn't be about hotel revenues but curling excellence.

Manitoba can point to the amazing record of Jennifer Jones last 20 years but sadly the 12 team format hasn't produced much in the way of excellence - IF YOU REMOVE JONES FROM THE EQUATION.

Most, if not all of Manitoba Scotties gold from 1984 to current (35 years) has been delivered by Connie Laliberte & JJ Jones.

Near interruption by import skip Michelle a couple years back - putting up a furious battle with Ontario Ace Rachel Homan - but in the end, even Michelle's excellence couldn't withstand the Ontario shot-pelting.

Manitoba starting to develop better teams capable of standing up to Homan, Carey, Jones, Silvernagle, Scheidegger but these girls are being gobbled up by other competitive teams (ie. Meilleur, Birchard)

Should Jones hang up her sliders (in a year or two) I suspect that will free up Kaitlyn Lawes to put together a Manitoba based super team. If not - don't like their chances vs. Homan, Silvernagle, Scheidegger.

Einarson has been the most promising development for emerging Manitoba teams. Great bonspiel warrior - addition of Val Sweeting (import) has steadied a rocky ship. Einarson will give Jones all she can handle this year in the Battle of Manitoba - Jones no longer has a Scotties pass - although if Jones is expunged by Einarson in Manitoba - look for Jones to qualify for the Scotties play-in game - based on accumulated points!

I'm confused as to why you think dropping 2 teams is somehow going to improve Manitoba's chances.
Whether you have 10,12 or 50 teams, the winner will be one of the teams that curls on tour.
In fact I would argue the opposite. Look at the Zacharias team. They went to provincials and got beat up the first couple times, now they are dangerous team. With new format they may not have gained that experience and without the carrot of a provincial spot, rural players may not even bother trying anymore.

I agree. Tour curlers need to meet non tour curlers to prove their melt. There is supposed to be a hierarchy in sport. But obviously tradition is not a valid argument. I think a larger pool of teams is good, though my opinion is just one. I would like to see some stats - count of curlers, count of clubs, count of entries in provinials, by province. Sure there has been decline, and growth. Sigh.

Dropping some fawn teams from the Manitoba womens guarantees NOTHING.

Still comes down to about 4 to 6 teams - those the ones who tour regularly. Jones actually over-tours which may be a detriment.

Should note Manitoba clings onto its storied past in men's play w/ 32 teams. Probably many towns, cities in Canada where they don't even have 32 curling teams.

Manitoba has fared poorly in national play since the halcyon days of Jeff Stoughton ended. Now, basically McEwen/Reid who tend to break down vs. superior super-teams.

You didn't answer the question. You said the change from 12 to 10 was good because the 12 team format hadn't produced much.
Please explain how 10 is going to produce more success.

No, its not gonna produce more national winners. You've already made that point.

What it does:

1. Less games (which theoretically means less ticket revenue & lower concession coin)

2. Not as many hotel rooms required - paid by Manitoba Curling Assoc. (definite savings)

3. Each game takes on more importance - particularly if they go into a twin round-robin tourney

Makes zone & spiel eligible events even more precious as most teams realize there's not as may chances to qualify - so perhaps these events will be better attended and generate more publicity/media.

Working women with careers can take off less time in the new format, too - although this point may only effect a select few curlers.
