Is curling statistically challenged?

Curling generally makes poor use of its records and stats. While other sports use their numbers, data and records to add colour and intensity to the viewer’s, spectator’s and fan’s experience, the TSN broadcasts along with Russ, Vic and Cheryl apparently live in a record and numbers-free zone - seldom referring to the great Brier records and superlatives.

Apparently the TSN doesn’t think its worth mentioning that every time Gushue wins a game in the 2021 Brier it adds to his all-time record for Brier games won,; and every game Glen Howard plays a Brier game, he adds to his all-time record for Brier games played. This is also Brad’s 18th Brier, which is another all-time record, but it barely registers with the commentator’s

This morning’s draw featured five consecutive stolen ends by Quebec vs Nunavut - all two’s - which must be close to an all-time record. It should have been noted.

Chances missed for adding a little statistical texture to the broadcasts...and to intensify the fandom. Can you imagine the NFL, the NBA or the NHL missing opportunities to promote their sports like these?

Nunavut is on the way to setting some sort of record for Brier futility what with conceding four straight games, being outscored by a 52-7 margin, and giving up 24 stolen points.

Another interesting record I hope TSN and the CCA won’t ignore.

Coming into the 2021 Brier these were the two leaders in all-time Brier games played:

Glen Howard 218
Brad Gushue 211

With Glen playing in only one game so far, and not looking like he’ll curl again in this Brier, Gushue will likely become the all-time leader before this is over.

The lowest combined score in Brier history is three. (2-1 (three times.)

There have also been at least five shutouts. (not verified since the record book appears to only go back to 1980...1990 for some records.)

The Brier record book is hard to find. Unlike most sports, a complete record book (most records date from 1980) is not in fact available online.

This monologue - not a single comment here so far - suggests that the CZ punditry are about as disinterested in Brier stats, records and superlatives as the CCA and the TSN broadcast crew appear to be.

Oh well, but my records suggest that NO’s 3-0 whitewash of Saskatchewan was the first 3-0 score in the history of the Brier. That being over 92 Briers.

If I’m correct, somebody’s asleep at the statistical wheel in the CCA and the TSN.

. On to busting that wide open...down 12-0 to NS in the 6th! Not sure this experiment is working curling Canada

Nova Scotia is now up 14-0 after 7 with an almost certain concession after 8.

The ALL-TIME shutout record at the Brier is 11-0.

Any bets TSN fails to mention it!

I think you may be right. 3-0 is tough to do. Certainly when they were 12 end games on iffy ice w iffy rocks it wouldn't occur. There may have been some scores close to that in the late 80s early 90s before the free guard zone. I seem to recall a game with Kevin Martin or Pat Ryan where they scored a 2 in the 1st and threw the 1st rock in the 2nd thru the rings intending to blank the rest of the way. I think the other team scored 1 at some point. That may have been in a cashspiel though and not the Brier.

Assuming Glen Howard will not curl again in the Brier, and that Gushue is through to the championship round, they are tied at 219 for the all-time record for games played in the Brier.

Any bets TSN will not mention it when Gushue plays his next game and breaks the tie?

It will be interesting to see if the statistics-averse TSN crew mention that Brad Gushue is playing in his 210th Brier match today....an ALL TIME RECORD for the Brier.

Can anyone confirm that Russ and Co. did or did not mention Gushue's historic most games played feat?

To be fair, in the prelude to the Draw 15 televised game between Epping and Koe, Vic does mention that "it was 6 blank ends, Northern Ontario ties a record low combined score with their 3 point win over Manitoba"

And as an aside, my opinion of Vic has evolved over the years. He's the best thing about the broadcast.

And just like I will always be a bit older than my younger brother, Mark Nichols will likely always have just a few less games and appearances than his teammate Gushue.

We certainly agree about Vic Rauter. He’s a great set-up man and someone who doesn’t take himself too seriously. He is invaluable to the broadcasts.

However, TSN and the CCA should provide him with better background material. Missing so many records and superlatives smacks of amateurism and shoddy research - and is an insult to the athletes themselves as well as the commentators

Only in curling!

PS Does anyone have Vic Rauter’s email address? I’m not on Twitter.

The lowest score in Brier final history is 3-2 when Pat Ryan beat Rick Folk of British Columbia 3-2 in the 1989,championship in Saskatoon.

No mention so far by the statistically-challenged commentators.
