Well, without that rule you could do something really stupid, like sell the alternate spot to the highest bidder, or give it to someone like Justin Bieber to garner attention. Curling team alternate seems like the only path for a non-athlete to win an Olympic medal.

If CurlCanada wants final approval in case someone does try your extremely unlikely scenario, then fine. But to have a hard and fast rule that eliminates a team's 5th player who has been with them for a while and fits in while forcing them to get someone totally new to them is not helping at all.
