Covid-19

Sadly, the curling world has lost someone to the pandemic. Christian Leibbrandt from Netherlands recently passed away. He served as both photographer and official at many events. His wife Shari Leibbrandt-Demmon, formerly of Calgary, has served as coach of the Dutch mens’ team for several years. Condolences to Shari and the rest of Christian’s family.

In her weekly column for The Courier, Eve Muirhead says they’ve just been told that the Portage la Prairie event has been cancelled for next season due to COVID.

^ As they're usually quite competitive on the ice, it's always fun to see how well they all get along off the ice.

With out a vacine, group limits will still be in place. Not sure how a league or curling club can funtion with a limit of 50 people.

Anyone see the 2020/21 season going ahead without a vacine?

It's a wait-and-see thing right now. Most clubs will have until mid to late August to firm up their plans, so we really need to see where this virus takes us.

Even if a club can figure out how to safely operate if social distancing rules remain, how can the game itself even be played? No sweeping? Two man teams only? Masks? Staggered start times? Will there be any socializing after?

The big question is "will people return"? Some won't be able to financially afford it. Others will be afraid. More still won't like the new rules and limitations.

It's going to be one screwed up curling season and I think some clubs will be forced to permanently close.

.
Yes, clubs will lose members.
And I don't think the season will start in Sept./Oct. as usual.
But I do believe that the season can be salvaged.

Sweepers can stay 6 feet apart - for the past few years, it's been quite rare that both sweepers sweep at the same time, anyway.
Wipe the rock handles with peroxide or alcohol after every game. During games, pay particular attention to ensuring that every player throws the same rocks throughout the game. If players want to switch rocks during a game, make sure to wipe the handles.

I don't see a problem with everyone wearing a mask - it's a cold environment, after all. I wouldn't want to wear a mask playing outdoor soccer on a summer day, but I see no problem with people wearing them to curl.

No socializing after the games, as everyone maintaining a 6 foot separation would be next to impossible. This would cut into the club's revenue, of course - but I don't see this as being optional.

So it is feasible, with some effort by everyone.
The main problem I see is in the locker rooms. In order to maintain a 6 foot separation in locker rooms, there would have to be only a specific number of people allowed in at a time. But giving every 'shift' 10 minutes - or even 5 minutes - would really stretch out the locker room time, requiring people to arrive an hour before their game.

I do think that curling could have adjustment made which still make the game playable, as opposed to a contact sport such as say, MMA.

Very interesting release from NWT Curling. I do wonder what the "Return to Curling Guidelines" will entail. Making the skips sweep their own rocks for a change? ;)

NWT Curling
2 hrs ·
As many of you are aware the GNWT recently announced its Emerging Wisely plan which outlines the path forward to emerging safely and wisely from the current COVID-19 public health restrictions. The document stated that curling could return when final measures are lifted. We want to notify our curling members that the NWT Curling Association (NWTCA) is working with the GNWT, Curling Canada, the Provincial/Territorials Curling Associations and Sport North in creating "Return to Curling Guidelines" that will enable curling to return this fall in a safe and responsible manner. The NWTCA will offer recommendations for club administrators, coaches, and anyone organizing curling-related activities. The NWTCA is committed to safe sport and will work with our partners over the coming weeks. If practiced responsibly, curling can be a great opportunity for participants to relieve stress, socialize with others, provide much-needed exercise and serve an important role in the NWT's recovery.

Stay Safe!

Nick Saturnino
President, NWTCA

To be fair, the big question is how many events will go on and I do think that teams might play maybe half the tour events they would usually play. Slam teams, might lose less and might even be advantaged because they're already slam teams and there won't be a lot of events happening in the next year. Provincials and Nationals might be the difference between making the Pre-Trials and not making it. I wonder if Curling Canada will change the qualification format to allow more two-year ranking, because if the goal is to find the best 15 Canadian teams off of 3 bonspiels, it might not be what it was made for. Now, changing the rules in the middle of the qualifying process could be called unfair, but what do you do in case of a pandemic?

for me the scary thing is that the 2 biggest events outside the slams have been cancelled already. you know more events will follow. its about both the aspect of can events afford to be run or will they even be allowed to.

we could see a very localized year where teams play only within the province. european teams will have to stay in europe.

Yes, overseas teams won’t be able to come unless Canada lifts its 2 week quarantine. Same for the Asian teams. Of course these teams can decide to live in Canada during the season and do the quarantine but there may not be any events for them to curl in.

I have a feeling curling may not start until January.
