Unlevel Ice

We are challenged with a rented ice room that has extremely poor insulation due to the fact that it wasn't built for curling. This year we finished our flood in very warm outside temps (75 F most days) and were left with unplayably unlevel ice (although it appears perfect to the naked eye). On the worst wall sheet, the rocks fall to the wall with about 8 feet of negative ice. I tried to build up the low side with 3 full cans of pebble knowing that it would not be enough but hoping I'd at least see some progress..nothing. Now I am wondering how to fix this. We could re-flood but I'm not confident that would do much since we already did about 15 floods to get to this point. I'm wondering about some sort of staggerred flood where we flood/freeze 2-3 feet off the wall, then 4-5 feet off the wall, etc in an attempt to build up the low side. Any help here is appreciated.

Controlled melt?

I am not sure of the process, and others may correct me here, but it seems that doing a controlled melt might help.

If you are on Facebook, join the group Curling Ice Technicians Unite. You will get a bunch of ideas from that group.

Why is it unlevel? Are you losing water out of the rink area on that side? Based on your description, flooding is probably the best solution.

Is your negative curl anywhere on the width of the sheet or only within so many feet of the boards? If it's anywhere along the width of the sheet that almost sounds more like a leak than an insulation issue.

Does this happen every year when it's warm or just this year?

I agree with jhcurl in that a flood would be your best way out of the situation, though if it truly is an insulation issue you might have to wait until outdoor temps cool down a bit. I also second joining the FB group - lots of good information there.

John

Unlevel Ice - More Detail

We have falls to the walls on outside sheets each year but this year it was really severe. We assume this is because of the warmth of the walls and some evaporation that is taking place. That or warm air tending to circulate along the walls. But we're not too sure. We wound up flooding this out which seemed to work well but it's got some slight draw backs...we found when you "step flood" (flood a 4 foot path off the wall, let it freeze, then an 8ft path, etc) you wind up with ridges that then later need to be leveled with full sheet flooding....it works but takes multiple days. Thanks to all for their comments here.

One more related question. We have four sheets at our club. Traditionally we flood side to side which has us crossing all four sheets during each pass. This year we did some of that but then went to a "sheet by sheet" flood where we'd do all of Sheet 4, then 3, etc. Are there any opinions on which is better? Perhaps this had something to do with our wall-fall issues although I can't think of why that would be. Any other flooding comments are welcomed too as we have just started doing our own flooding (the City we lease from has done this in the past)

Do you have full-length dividers between each sheet? If you do, a sheet-by-sheet flood shouldn't cause any problems unless your dividers are leaky (many of the ice techs in the FB group flood sheet by sheet once dividers are in). If you don't have full length dividers I'm not sure how a sheet-by-sheet flood would be possible - I'd expect in this instance the centerlines on each sheet would be high.

Any thoughts on flooding technique - I know some have a special flooding wand that releases water at ice level instead of from a standing height.

Make a wand out of PVC with a 45 bend at the bottom. Ball value at the top for shutoff. Should try to get a flow rate of 10 GPM and time your flood so you know how much water goes into a flood.

Flood end to end, starting the next flood where the last one ended.

When it comes to welding, safety is always a top priority. One of the most important pieces of safety equipment for any welder is a high-quality welding helmet. best welding helmet under $100
