Jennifer Jones: Act 3, Scene 4

Watching a sulking & obviously defeated Jennifer Jones go down easy in a virtual nothing game to perennial nemesis Rachel Homan certifies the idea Jones is just about thru as an ultra-competitive threat on the women's circuit. She'll still win her share of games - but most against inexperienced & inconsistent performers.

Its a shame really mainly because of what is clearly becoming an absolute waste of a tremendous team; although Jones seems to have managed to drag a lagging Kaitlyn Lawes into the mire with her.

Great front end - superb brushers but with Jones & Lawes performing in the mid 60s to low 70s, not much chance against hungry wolves like Homan, Scheidigger, Carey, Fleury, Einarson, etc.

Biggest problem for Jones is simply lack of shot-making. She's missing the stick, having trouble finding draw weight but still calls a difficult game which puts her into major predicaments too often - and ends up providing her opponents with routine deuces & 3's.

Jen's excuse after being downed by Homan is predictable. She won't have to worry about Homan anymore for a Trials spot cuz Homan just got the first one - taking her out of the equation. Not a particularly riveting excuse but an excuse nevertheless.

2-4 in a field stocked by some inexperienced teams, others with retired broadcasters filling in at skip, etc. just won't cut it.

Jen's in a whole wack o' trouble, no question. But she's got contracted curlers at her beck 'n call - so no changes in the offing - just more curling & prolly more disappointment.

gosh - waiting all morning for the Jones bashing thread.

Other threads, I look at you never comment on - like one's that might mean something.

Sure enough here we are AGAIN - you should just copy and paste each time she loses an event.
save yourself all that typing.

She is and still will be a great ambassador for curling.

Well said. I don't hear ML putting down Gushue and Jacobs for having off weeks.

I just think of Homans fantastic Olympics when he aggrandizes her and know he blows mostly smoke. We are used to that.

Goo & Jake were obviously surprises - but only 3 teams qualify for the playoff in this type of affair. Really surprised though at how powerful Epping has become with Laing & Fry on board.

Jake & Goo will rise again - and they're always major threats. Just can't say the same about JJ - who has been in semi-decline since winning her last Scotties & Worlds - ie. no Homan at Scotties - and a legit & riveting last rock win over Sweden in the world gold medal game.

I've often opined about Manitoba boiling down to a 3-way w/ JJ, Einarson & Fleury battling for the trip. However, the way JJ has been clumming around - someone like Peterson or Zacharias might sneak up and replace Jones in the Top 3.

Fleury has easily been the most consistent Manitoba team on the circuit so far; Einarson is the most spectacular and most up 'n down. On paper Einarson has a better team in front of her than Fleury but now I'm not so sure - Fleury's lead seems equal to Meiileur while Selena Ngeyvon has snuck up on Val Sweeting and at this point is clearly superior.

Einarson is clearly a better and bigger hitter than Tiny Tracy but other than that, Fleury has a far more nuanced/balanced game and her players seem to have bought into her quiet leadership 100% - while Einarson is clearly more mercurial, far more than even Jones.

its getting pretty tiring seeing this threads pop up opened by a supposed "fan" of jen. constantly tearing her down and writing her off.

has jen declined. has she lost some of hat made her so good?. yes. she is not the same. but not every curler can be glenn howard. it seems he rules of time dont apply to glenn. je is still a fantastic curler though and she's proven time and again that to write her off is a mistake

i remember a lot of people writing norberg off around 2010/2011 because she wasnt doing much on tour anymore. however , look at what happened. she won olympic gold in 2010 and world gold in 2011.

for jen its not about being great every week it'll be about being great when it truly matters. this week is just one week. it'd be just like her to come from nowhere and win the scotties again. and lets not forget. she will likely have 2 chances to get there

You're right - she'll prolly have two chances.
1. She's auto-berthed for the 2019 Manitoba Scotties.

2. She'll prolly qualify for at least #2 seed in the STOH play-in game - especially if top rivals like Schiedegger, Einarson or Fleury, Silvernagle, Carey, Homan, etc. all qualify thru their respective provinces. However, if Jen continues to slobber-nok the loser of Einarson/Fleury plus the loser of Scheidegger/Carey may creep up on Jen's position for the play-in.

Depending on how the rest of the season plays out , she may NOT be top 2 ctrs play in for Scotties. Yet to be determined. Still a couple big spiels yet. Including MB Scotties.

Could be resigned to Winnipeg fun spiel.

Carey doesn’t need to qualify in Alta. Won’t her rink be Team Canada?

she actually isnt having a terrible season by any stretch. she won a title, made a final. qualified in the first 2 slams. not up to her standard but she's doing pretty good. think right now the only 3 canadian teams ahead of her are einarson, homan and fleury .

certainly one of those will not be able to get to scotties,. would be really unlikely to have 2 of those 3 miss out

think rocque is the only other team that could pass her. silvernagle is not having a good year and scheidegger isnt doing to great either

The key for Scheidegger is getting back to top condition and winning Alberta, getting another shot at the Hearts . . .
. . . . Carey easily the most mercurial up 'n downer I've ever seen in women's curling . . . getting herself thrashed by Tracy Fleury was tough to watch. .
Even if Jones maintains her spot in the points race and loses Manitoba she'll be the underdog regardless of whether she faces Einarson or Fleury in the play-in . . .

If I was JJ I'd certainly want a shot at Einarson as Fleury appears to be this year's wrecking crew . . . only Homan appears able to stand up to her . . .

Einarson is nearly as mercurial as Chels Carey - but if Jones catches her in an up cycle - Jones doesn't win . . . if Einarson is down-cycle she'll be in a dog-fight for the play-in, as Jones rarely puts up the big numbers anymore.

Last I checked curling was a team sport. Jen needs the others to make their shots too so she’s not left with circus shots.

Kaitlyn seems to be struggling this season. But again better to peak just before play downs than at an early Slam.
