" If they ( the Italian Team ) haven't left by now they won"t make it."

Actually the Italians have been training in Calgary for nearly two months. Japan and South Korea have been training in Vancouver. China is also in Canada but their exact location has not been divulged.

So while the probability that COVID - 19 may spread among the participating curlers is remote, the risk to senior citizens who will attend this event is not. Despite this risk and having taken into consideration the numerous recent sporting, entertainment - related events that have been cancelled, both the WCF and Curling Canada have expressed confidence that persons attending this event will be safe. Needless to say, if any untoward results occur both of these organizations are going to have more than " egg on their face".

With the NBA 'suspending' their season, pro tennis tournaments, World Figure Skating Championships, etc., etc. being cancelled or postponed indefinitely... and the NHL and MLB likely to do something similar, it's fortunate - in a twisted way - that curling is considerably less popular than are these major sports - and so the World Women's Curling Championship is proceeding as scheduled. Hopefully the World Men's will do the same.

If curling attracted crowds of 10,000 or 20,000, its events would most likely be cancelled.

Excellent point, in CBCs list of sports & status during this pandemic curling wasn’t even mentioned... https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/...break-1.5477890

^ That's a depressing - if impressive - list of sporting events affected by fears of COVID-19. A huge number of them.
The BBC put together a similar list - by date, rather than alphabetically.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/51605235

There are sports events on both lists which one would think don't attract a much larger crowd than curling does... so maybe we've just gotten lucky thus far.

Curling Canada and world curling are carrying along as if nothing is wrong. Scotland just issued a ban on gatherings over 500. So the men’s worlds are in jeopardy unless they follow golf & play with no spectators. But no word from those 2 organizations.

The world mens' in Scotland will not happen.
Today or tomorrow they will announce that the women's worlds in BC will play with no spectators (80%) or is outright cancelled (20%). To do otherwise is irresponsible.

the sad thing is that since its in scotland there may not be a danger of there being 500 or more people in the event at once. we'll see. but if it is cancelled will they give it to scotland again next year is my question

one would think that there's pressure on them to cancel now. figure skating and womens worlds did. the government could always also step in and do it for them. take it out of their hands like what basically happened with indian wells

Someone I follow on Twitter who is in charge of organizing an annual convention that has been called off recently pointed out the following: they had to wait until local government ordered them to cancel the event before they could cancel it.

She said this was because contract terms between facilities, hotels, and events usually do not allow for refunds unless there's a insurance policy covering the cancellation. Insurance policies don't kick in unless there's an event that forces a cancellation, such as a natural disaster or an official government body declaring the event must not go forward. To cancel it anyway without any refunds or insurance would've crippled her organization financially to a point of no recovery.

So, absent such a declaration from the Prince George or BC or federal governments, women's worlds will likely still go ahead I would guess.

I would hope that they make a stronger statement, Something along the lines of banning any gathering of over 200 people for instance to go along with their "recommendation.

As a curling fan this is sad, but necessary

I am still going to push my rules for getting through this.

QUIT HOARDING CRAP! (I suppose the TP will come in handy if you are a naughty halloweener.)

Wash your hands with soap and water. Often. Soap breaks up the virus and, like Raid, kills it dead!

If you are sick STAY HOME! Look after yourself. Get medical attention if you must.

It looks like we are all doomed to watching reruns. Netflix with the chills will not be quite as much fun.

After watching that piece of drugged out, pig faced, orange piece of dotard stumble and lie through last nights address to the nation I have three thoughts.

I am so sorry for the Americans who aren't idiots.

I am so glad I don't live down there right now.

I wish that we didn't live so close.

BUT HILLARY'S E-MAILS....

God help us all.

For the WWCC, lots of money wasted on travel and hotels by teams and curling federations that are already operating on a limited budget.
Hopefully, there will be some compensation... but there isn't a lot of money in curling to give financial compensation.

Not a good situation.

My opinion is that if the spread continues we will be seeing cancellations of world events such as this and travel will be severely limited. A vaccine has been sent for approval, but unless this is a success we can kiss goodbye to Curling Worlds and perhaps the Olympics and my 401(k).

Most of my prediction is right, especially the part about my retirement accounts.

Compensation from where/whom. Surely you are not suggesting govts/taxpayers step up and compensate teams/federations. Let the WCF and CC dig themselves out of there financial mess.

im sure everyone is hoping for the best but things arent going to be okay or good enough in 3 weeks to hold the event.

this is like the indian wells/miami situation in tennis. indian wells was cancelled and miami was trying to be optimistic but not even a week later the cancellation became official.

i just dont know how they can even consider holding the evnt. dont put these teams through that. tell them now

Everybody's retirement plan suffered a painful meltdown over the last 10 days or so. However, as in 1987, 2002 and 2008, the financial markets will recover in due course and go on to new heights.

The critical thing to keep in mind during these "periods of turmoil" is to stay the course Unless you are within 3 - 5 years of retirement.

I was loud yesterday as I talked to a friend at the checkout of our Local Coop, jammed with hoarders of all ages, colours and sizes.
"Look at all the toilet paper. DO THESE PEOPLE THINK THE VIRUS IS GOING TO FLY OUT OF THEIR ASSES?"
Honestly, I just don't care anymore.
Human beings are morons.
