Russian doping ban question

With the announcement today by WADA that Russia is banned from all international competitions for the next four years over doping, I'm wondering how the smaller curling events will handle this. Obviously they can't compete as "Russia" at the Olympics and presumably the Worlds as well, but their athletes can still compete under a neutral flag if they can prove they're clean.

How will something like the Grand Slams or the other spiels that we sometimes see Russian teams in handle this? Would they follow that "prove they're clean" rule too, and if so, how would they enforce it?

The Curling News just posted a lengthy Twitter thread which answers a few of my questions.

The Russians are, as I thought, now out of this year's Worlds, meaning Kovaleva's team (which had qualified in the 4th slot) cannot be there.

The ban also includes Russia hosting events, meaning the 2020 world juniors they were were supposed to hold will likely have to move.

That's just cruel. I mean, not all Russians dope and in this case that's a major blow to the field. Kovaleva is one of the top teams in the world . Sucks that the innocent are getting punished too

Considering when the world juniors take.place that's a huge inconvenience to now have to find a new host in such short time

I suggest some of you read the entire transcript from WADA and not rely on the precise put out by curling news. Did you not see the curlers from Russia at the 2018 olympics even though Russia was banned then too.

Cruel? Sucks? Did someone tell you that life was always fair? Children going to bed hungry every night - perhaps they have the right to complain.

Oh, I see so because children are going hungry I'm.not allowed to.think it's wrong or unfair to sweep all russian athletes under the same punishment. I'm.aware they can appeal to compete under a neutral flag but tje clean ones shouldnt have to. Not only that but if kovaleva loses the ability to compete as russia over this to spite doing no wrong herself I have a problem with that and I'm allowed to. You might think " oh she still gets to compete so ita fine" but I'm sure to her and the team not getting to wear your countries colors on your back when you have earned the right to sucks and is a problem.

You sound like those people that bitch at people who defend animals and speak out against online .like we shouldnt care about animal abuse when people are being abused.

Banned

This may come off a bit too harsh but I think all Russian athletes should be banned from all international sporting events for the full 4 years. This wasn't about an athlete accidentally taking a supplement with an unknown banned substance. This was Government run, government enforced, attempted government cover up, at the highest government levels. Then they try to blame it all on a guy now in witness protection for fear for his life. This must be done as a deterrent to anyone who may try this in the future. Yah yah yah, but what about the innocent? Let them get tested and compete for a different country. Russia should have ZERO representation anywhere for 4 years.

In my opinion.

What about the slams though? Will they want to compete? I imagine their curlers' goals are still toward the Olympics. Also, I remember a Russian curling athlete being tested positive at the 2018 Olympics.
Curlers, and the Russian Curling Association needs to keep their athletes moving forward in the world, and hopefully they will. Maybe with extra grit.

As a believer of the old adage "let the punishment fit the crime", I agree in principle with the recent WADA decision.

However, I am not comfortable at all with the fact that many fine Russian athletes, particularly those who are "clean" and have always been "clean", could be adversely affected. For these folks this punishment would clearly exceed the crime because they have not committed a crime! Whether they remain in Russia or have to move to nearby Estonia in order to compete is not a decision they should have to make.

Having said this, it should be noted that the WADA decision does contain numerous caveats and compromises which could allow Russian athletes to compete on the global stage. Those who can prove they are not linked to the county's doping programme, for example, will (apparently) be given the "all clear" to participate.

Agreed. I had much more enjoyment from the Brier/Scotties than I did from the Oly (which too much money and resources and importance is being spent on imo).
