quote from their website " With the Tour becoming very international over the years, much more focus needs to be directed on its own events from"
Perhaps they could hire a proof reader. From? From what?

After a quick read of the new rules I have a couple of concerns.
1. NO restrictions on how many spiels count towards points. Used to be top 8 now it's unlimited. This will only help the teams that have both the time and money to play every week. Not counting the top 5-6 teams in canada, the rest pay to play or at best break even, that's why they can only play 8-10 events per year. Unlike many international teams that would play 15-20 events.

2. Points based on prize money not strength of field. An extreme example 24 teams ranked 50-150 but somehow manage to get huge sponsor for 100k. They would earn more points than say high ranked shorty Jenkins winner with 15 of the top 20 teams.

I think they need to tweak the rules a bit.

Don't worry about the WCT points system too much as it's only for the tour. The WCF rankings are still whats used by CTRS and the Grand Slams.

That extreme example is impossible. Teams go where the money is. Look at the Penticton tthat was brand new 3 years ago. It had a great purse and 7 of the top 11 teams in the world signed up in the first year. And if I remember well last year in season 3 you had 6 of the top 7 teams in Canada in it. And if you want to be a slam team, you'd want to play in those because you want points. And the goal is mainly to say that Slams are above any other bonspiels as they should be.

Now, about the teams playing more events in a year, I don't think it's that big of a deal since they'll have to get results to get in slams and sure would it help a team like Edin? Yes, but if Edin lays an egg at every slam, he won't get the slam points and he's probably the one player that will be associated with this, but he played 10 events this year, including nationals, and Europeans, but excluding Contiental Cup, it would have been 13 had cancellations not been a thing. So, he's played in 4 non-slams bonspiels. Gushue, Epping played in 5. Jacobs, was probably the one elite* Canadian team that didn't play as much with 3. Even if you have a team with quasi-unlimited funds, they would still need to do well at events, but if they are worth many points, they'll have to get by the elite teams at big events.
*By elite, I mean the top 10 Canadian teams in the CTRS last season

The extreme example is more than possible. Non slam events don't have to invite or accept teams based on ranking. With no sof multiplier and points only based on total prize money, there is zero incentive for local organisers to have the elite teams attend. They can keep all the points local.
Use Charlevoix as the extreme example. They decide Quebec teams only. Too bad for the rest.
Same if any event just says no out of province or international team need apply.

Charlevoix had 9 Quebec teams and 7 teams billed from outside Quebec last season. It's not the worst I've seen that has a ton of local teams, so it's a bad example. And even if they forced a Quebec only rule, couldn't the WCT tell them that it's not a WCT event if they refuse the top teams in?

And from the organizers, it looks like they only guarantee 8 Quebec teams and the Chandler team from Northern Ontario got in even though they were the 14th team ranked in the field. So, it's not like they are forcing teams out and if they are, they are doing a rather poor job at it.

Now, there is one way to make sure that tournament organizers don't abuse this and it's simple, that the world curling tour ranking is accounted for WCT events, and the higher the event is the less wild card spots is required. How hard is it to say that by the registering date, the top X teams are in and we might have to pick the last teams, so you might get some teams getting in like a Wild Card, but it would still be earned mostly by what those teams have done during the year before the registering date.

I'm ALL for allowing, even mandating X amount of local teams, makes the local sponsors feel like they're getting their money's worth. However, the big IF is, what if local spiels, anywhere in the world, deny elite entrance to keep the points.

The whole reason for my first post. The rules have to be tweaked.

And FYI there's nothing in the rules today that say non slam spiels have to let any team in they don't want.
