General Questions from a Newbie

Hi everyone!

I’m new here, although I’ve poked around the site for quite a bit. I try to follow this sport as best I can given that, 1) I’ve been to a rink that has curling ice once in my life, and 2) I live in Ohio, about 90 minutes from a curling center.

So I don’t get much on tv (the Olympic channel and NBC sports network have a bit, and my ESPN subscription lets me watch TSN when there’s no broadcast rights.

So naturally I’ve convinced a friend of mine to fly in from Florida so we can go to the Brier in Kingston for a few days.

I’ve got questions that I’m sure everyone here knows or has hashed out in the forums somewhere, but I can’t find them.

1) This feels so basic and dumb that I’m embarrassed to ask. How does the draw to the button to determine who gets the last stone in the first end work? Does one person throw it? Two or Four and add them up? Do they sweep it? How do They measure it?

It’s never on TV and I can’t find out!

2) If the point is to develop provinces, why isn’t the wild card figured out by runners up in provincial tournaments or something? Feels like some of the professional teams are like mutts with people from all over, and they represent a province by throwing a dart at a map and hoping one of them lives there.

3) if it’s about showcasing the best teams, why not give the provinces a team each, and then they can have a team for the territories, and then let the mutt teams battle in a tournament for a couple of wild cards?

2-3a/b) maybe I’m just naive.

4) what is this patch thing that happens at the brier?

5) I read about radio broadcasting of the event while you’re there (like the tsn feed) is this a thing?

That’s all for now. I’m sure I’ll think of more. Thanks for reading.

Chris

I'm a newbie too, but here's what I've learned.

Last stone draw to determine hammer is usually done to conclude the pre-game practice session for the team. TV usually cuts this out, but you can often see it when it's part of a webstream broadcast (e.g. Mouat vs Muyres, the infamous first end 7-ender).

Within the scope of one game, I think it's usually 1 draw vs 1 draw, probably any one from the team will do. Within the scope of a larger event, I think they must rotate so that eventually every team member get to throw at least one in-turn and one out-turn draw, and some formula is used to assign a score for the entire team for that event, to be compared against other teams if needed (e.g. to break ties).

If you just want to see draw shot challenges like this, but in other context (post-game instead of pre-game), some events do use it to break ties and/or decide winners. The most famous example is probably 2018 Continental Cup, where the entire event is ultimately decided by a draw to the button. This was an extraordinary circumstance, so it was fully explained how it works during broadcast.

Other notable example is from the TSN Skins Game, e.g. Einarson vs Fleury in 2019, where Einarson elected to have Briane Meilleur to throw the draw to the button for $11,000 and the win.

Dear chris - im guessing chris is your code and you are donald trump Well sure, who wouldn't want to be President Trump? Just ask him. Everyone would. I wonder if you could make an effective curling brush with whatever that hair thingy is on his head?

Click curling on you tube - lots there and today in winterpeg it was on all day til the oscarsYoutube helps a lot. The World Curling people put a bunch of stuff on there which is nice. Lots of organizations that might not draw enough TV eyeballs only need to draw a few hundred or a thousand or so to make webstreaming worthwhile... so that's good too. I've used the little scoreboard on your site to look up what's playing live and I'm pleasantly surprised how much is.

There are 16 professional mutts and you these 16 are invited to slams and the points they share and the $100,000 pots are what determines invitations to future events - think royalty - you are born into the slams - like senators you are appointd for life

Lucky them. How do new teams come into being? Looking at the Brier... there's what, one mutt team skipped by a younger guy? Alberta?

Tell us more about yourself as i dont think you are naive at all

Hurry hard
Well, I'm 40, about 60 miles south of Cleveland, Ohio. Spent a decade in computers, economic development, and government affairs and am permanently soured on government affairs (and that was even before it all went nuts everywhere). About 10 years ago I got into following curling as best I could. A couple years ago I started noticing all the curling things on YouTube and watching them. Realized the Brier seemed to be higher quality than anything else I'd see. Then about 4-5 years ago, I was watching a Brier YouTube video and it was Quebec and PEI and the announcers couldn't get enough of making fun of a guy named Martin Crete of Quebec and how loud and obnoxious he was - and I was convinced that they decided Quebec was loud and not as good looking on TV as the other teams...

I decided at that moment "THAT'S THE TEAM I'M ROOTING FOR."

Turns out they (Menard) were good enough to be really competitive and not a mutt team, and had even won a Brier. I know Menard retired, but I'm bummed that Crete didn't enter the Quebec playdowns, and that he won't be there.

I'm kinda pumped that it looks like Glenn Howard will get a chance to be the wild card team. From my distant-not-in-Canada view he's older, represents a different time and type of game, and if he could make a run, it would feel like Jimmy Connors making that run in the US Open when he was past his prime in '91, or Jack Nicklaus winning the Masters when he was considered "old and

cnpeters,

1) The precise draw-shot-challenge rules seem to vary from one event to the next, but the basic principle is that at the end of every pre-game practice, someone from each team throws one or two stones to the button, and these are measured, and the better team gets the benefit of being better. Those benefits can be having hammer to start the same, or rock choice, or the cumulative value throughout a tournament cab become a tiebreaker if the standings are clogged with level teams at the end.

2 and 3). The point is both to develop the provinces and to determine the best team to send to the world championship. The introduction of the wild card team coincided with the end of the relegation system that used to consign the bottom four teams to a lesser tournament each season. Now every province and territory starts the week in the main event, plus the wild card, plus Team Canada, getting to the nice even number of 16.

4) The Patch (from the term "briar patch") is the social/party/bar area that's near the venue where the fans and sometimes the curlers themselves hang out between draws.

5) I've not been to a Brier or Scotties yet, but I have been to some Grand Slams and the Continental Cup. At all of those, they transmitted the audio that's being used on the TV broadcast of the feature sheet on an FM frequency, so you can listen along in real-time to what the commentators and some of the players are saying. (You get the at-the-moment audio, not the TV feed which would have a delay.) If you bring a small portable radio, you can tune in. Sometimes they also sell or give out a small radio receiver earpiece that also does the job. (Continental Cup did this in Las Vegas, but for the Slams I had to bring my own radio.)

^ If you have an affinity for Quebec curlers, look up Guy Hemmings. He was quite a character.

^ If you like Glenn and Martin Crete, you would have loved Glenn's brother Russ, who was more loud and obnoxious than Crete.
(Just kidding - Russ was definitely very LOUD, and seemed obnoxious, but he really wasn't...)

Is there a practical way anyone can watch any of the names mentioned here play? It's not like these old footages are available on the internet, are they?

Curling Canada has the occasional historical footage, but for the most part they're not available on the internet, as far as I can tell. The most complete collections I've found so far probably only go back to 2013-ish.

I'm enjoying reading about these guys, particularly Paul Goswell ordering a pizza.

The first time Curling was a thing in the states for the olympics, a really big deal was made about the curling announcers NBC imported from Canada to call it. I *think* it was the Salt Lake City Olympics - and I *think* the announcers were Duguid and Chevrier? Is that Gerry Duguid the same or a related guy?

That's funny. Ulsrud looks like he could take the hecklers out back and beat the tar out of them, but apparrently he's the nicest guy ever.
