If I was a suspicious person I would be worried about today's Canada/Swiss game. It looked like they both were trying to lose, only Paetz didn't get the memo. If the Ontario Gambling Corp is not checking to look for any unusual betting patterns in today's game, they should be! I am sure the game was played on the up and up but with scandals in tennis and lately chess, MMA and even fishing, Curl Canada should have stayed far away from being sponsored by a betting site.

^ I completely agree with you...
The marketing for gambling has gotten out of control very quickly. This isn't surprising, though, given that organized crime is behind most gambling entities.

It's a bad look for any sport to be associated with / sponsored by a gambling company. It's incredibly obvious that money is the only thing that matters here as sports will sell their soul to the highest bidder today.

Associated problems will get worse and worse as gambling gains more and more of a foothold in sports. We're already seeing a lot of vile and vulgar insults aimed at pro athletes on 'social media' from gamblers who lost money betting on them or on their team. That will get worse in the coming years, and, inevitably, some players in all sports will succumb to being 'bought' by gamblers...
This newly legalized gambling stands a very good chance of ruining pro sports as we know it.

For those saying that Sweeting should throw SEcond stones and/or that Einarson should be benched...

No.

This team has been the best women's team in Canada - and one of the best women's teams in the world - for a number of years now, with the current line-up.
This same team and same line-up just ran through the Scotties as clearly the best team.

Yes, they are struggling now. But the answer does not lie in changing something that has worked extremely well for a number of years.
Also, in the middle of the Worlds is not the time to experiment with a different line-up, which will inherently alter the dynamic and chemistry of the team. Instead, they all (including Carruthers and everyone else in the Canadian party) need to try their best to find a way to re-capture what was working with them during their many successes.

The 8th end against Japan should be taught in school as an example of historically bad strategy. And you can't blame the ice for that.

If you want the rock by rock replays, there were a couple of misses that happened that end. I think Brichard and Sweeting both missed a draw to the 4 foot down the same path light and tight...

Not a lot you can do when that happens...

What I cant figure out was in the game against Korea, Kerri had 2 draws in the 1st end to score 3 and she was heavy on both, down the same path...

Kevin Martin is talking about the rocks being a bit more mismatched than other sets of rocks? Maybe if you don't have a good matcher on your roster, you can get into trouble quick if you have 2 mismatched stones...

2023 Womens Worlds

Does anyone know where one could see the standings in the draw to the button totals?. Looks like it could be a deciding factor for the last 2 or 3 spots in the elimination round. I do not see total team stats posted anywhere on the World site.

I'm surprised SUI is 8th on DSC. It won't matter for SUI (so far undefeated with 2 games left and everyone else has at least 3 losses), but usually they're at/near the top of the list for DSC.

Holy bad sweeping batman. Einarson's first in 8 was left a few inches short of 2nd shot which was huge. Her guard in 10 was left a few inches short which was huger. And her tap in 10 was panic curled which was hugest. Don't expect that kind of poor sweeping from them but it happens.
The tiebreaker is, of course, wrong. The DSC distance is secondary in draws to the button AFTER the number of times you win the hammer. What is better, having a total DSC distance of 300cm and never winning the hammer or having a distance of 400cm and winning the hammer every time? It should be hammer W-L record, then total distance if that is tied.

They're DSC is similar to how they always are. It's the other teams that have shown a vast improvement, thus knocking the Suisse down the list.

I'm rooting for Tirinzoni at this point. They deserve it, not a single other team does. I still hope Canada medals but the best in the world is clear and it's the Swiss.

A loss to Denmark? Something not quite right with Einarson's team. And blaming her last shot in 8 on the lack of sweeping? She was narrow all the way.

Hmmm...

Win vs Denmark & finish in 3rd if Sweden Wins vs Italy, 2nd if Sweden loses to Italy.

Lose vs Denmark & they finish in 4th based on LSD...
Before the games started, I would have bet on Sweden to win that game...

Had this occurred, & Canada finished in 3rd, they play the Swiss in the semis, assuming they win the qualifier.

This way, they have an "easier"? road to the final?

They still need to go thru Italy & Norway first...

Not saying anyone purposefully throws a game, but you can take maybe some unnecessary risks to get ready for playoffs... If they don't work out for you, it isn't exactly a terrible thing...

What I can say is that the level of play is pretty even from top to bottom, most teams can come out and beat another team on any given day at this level. Its not like 10 years ago when maybe there were 4-6 really good teams. They're all good now.
Germany, Denmark, USA & Korea are all very good teams & have won slams / Europeans, medaled @ worlds before. Look @ Turkey. They can finish @ 6-6 if they win tonight, one game from playoffs... Canada is right there in the mix. Go Canada Go!!! Eyes on the prize!

Another poor performance on a must win game by Canada.
Maybe they should let the rocks curl naturally because they do not seem to have the technique on how to control them.

Disappointing last day for Sweden. Anna had a chance for a bye to the semis, and instead I believe finishes 5th, putting her team against Italy with the winner playing Switzerland.
Canada gets 6th place Japan with the winner moving on to face Norway in the other semi.

Is this the worst women's worlds of all time? The play quality is just abysmal from 2nd through to 13th.

Funny enough, the entire field DSCs this year is the best it's ever been in years since they introduced the 13 teams round robin/6 teams playoff format.

I have no explanation, other than guessing that maybe the ice is really good for practice, but then quickly goes to hell once the game starts for some reason.

Conspiracy theory is that this was a mild sabotage as a precursor to go down to 8 ends per game.

Most teams in the playoffs had a chance for a bye to the semis with just one more win, even sixth place Japan could have done so if they hadn't let their opener with Denmark slip away.

Maybe the quality of the curling isn't stellar, but the drama is off the charts.

The game was lost in the 3rd when Val talked her skip into a different shot than what was called…Sometimes you need to be quiet as a mouse and just make the shot your skip called (she got her way then blew the shot)….not excited about coach Carruthers input in the last end either..the damage was done..IMHO sinking a draw was the only way out of that mess.
They certainly do not look like gold at this point…Hopefully they get it together in playoffs.

Two things can happen..One is bad

Totally agree about that call in the 3rd end. I was cringing when Val and the other 2 talked Kerry out of her call. Wish Kerry would just stick to her guns more on her calls. She is the skip and yes I know the front end are supposed to be brilliant strategists (according to Russ and Cathy), but you also have to know when to defer to the last rock thrower. They are still curling tomorrow so they can still get on a roll.

Which is why I stated today.. not on day 1, sweden had two games today and needed to win just one. Clearly the top ranked teams underperformed this week.

I was in Sandviken and watched a couple of games. (Yes, I’m Swedish.) The ice conditions were of course different than grand slam ice. A bit straighter, and the WCF stones seem not as lively either. But this is no news, and I always wonder how this could come as a surprise to any Canadian team. I guess they are not prepared and haven’t played much in Europe. Again.
It goes without saying that any Swedish team would practise on Canadian ice before competing in Canada. And do the necessary adjustments in technique.
From a European view I guess it’s an advantage that the Canadian teams don’t get the preparations to perform their best. But from a curling lover’s perspective it’s too bad that we don’t get to see them at their prime.

Total points scored

According to my calculations, Canada allowed 74 points in the 12 matches they played. Switzerland allowed 36. Defense for the Canadians could be improved.
Switzerland had 2 games where they allowed more than 3 points, Canada had 11 such games. The ice conditions were more or less the same for each team.

This Canada/Japan game is such a disaster.
How Switzerland could possibly manage to lose this event will be beyond me. Team Hasselborg will need a ton of luck later today to get past them.
