Mixed Doubles Olympic Trials

They are in Portage la Prairie - Dec 28-Jan 2. That doesn't leave much time for the qualifying considering only 7 (of the 16) teams are qualified, and 3 of those 4 teams have Jones players! Gulp. The process is onerous.
The first seven: Jocelyn Peterman/Brett Gallant, Jennifer Jones/Brent Laing, Nancy Martin/Tyrel Griffith, Rachel Homan/John Morris, Kerri Einarson/ Brad Gushue, Kadriana Sahaidak/Colton Lott, and Lisa Weagle/John Epping. The CTRS standings make me think we'll see these five too:
Emilie Desjardins/Robert Desjardins, Kim Tuck/Wayne Tuck, Shannon Birchard/Catlin Schneider, Val Sweeting/Marc Kennedy, Bobbi Sauder/Brendan Bottcher. That makes 12. There are two other teams who qualify from events, and ultimately, the Last Chance: Top two not previously qualified finishers* from a Last Chance Qualifying Event, Dec. 10-13, 2021 (location to be announced >where?< ). (Invites will be based on the Canadian Mixed Doubles Rankings* as of Nov. 29, 2021 >tomorrow!< ).
This list certainly isn't accurate, and those on the threshold will be counting each and every point. Loss of athletes who will playing the 4 person game in Beijing will affect these berths... some are scrambling today. We'll see some last minute substitutions.
It is going to be a great event.

Thanks for the info, Nelski. I was wondering about this. Are players barred from competing in both the team and mixed doubles at the Olympics?

No double duty for Canadian curlers. This includes the fifths.

So, Jennifer, Jocelyn, and Lisa are all no-go and their partners, Laing, Gallant, and Epping will be on the hunt.
The men's champion is bound to have a few tosses too. Gushue (Einarson) etc etc. System might need a tweak or two. All this prep for...last minute adjustments.

And I'm pretty sure a saw a celebratory post saying Bruce and Vicky are repping Scotland. We'll see if being in both events affects their peformance.

Bruce Mouat is probably going to dazzle us with double medals at the Olympics. Probably both gold too.

Incorrect. Mouat and Dodds are representing GBR.

Team Mouat is in Men's. Team Muirhead has not qualified for the Olympics yet.

Oh! I wonder if Muirhead's strong showing at the Euros will push them toward that choice. Thanks for the clarifications.

It's not a question of choice. GBR is not in Women's in Beijing yet. They have to play a last chance qualifier against JPN, KOR, GER, etc.

OMG - strong teams in there. Three will qualify. Event Dec 5-18 in The Netherlands. Do any other national curling associations prohibit athletes from playing in both 4 Person and Mixed Doubles?

Women Teams: Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Latvia, Scotland, Turkey. And interestingly, USA is among 14 nations that have to play in the qualification event to get to Mixed Doubles in Beijing.

In 2018, Matt & Becca Hamilton did double duties for USA. There's a claim that Matt Hamilton is the most televised Olympian in 2018.

For 2022, Bruce Mouat for GBR and Oskar Eriksson for SWE are confirmed for double duties. Chris Plys will do the same if he qualifies USA for mixed doubles.

I'm not aware of any country besides CAN that forbids double duties. CAN does all sorts of things in curling that no other country in the world does.

I’ve thought about both sides of this but in the end I think not having people compete in both 4 man and mixed makes good sense. There’s so many good curlers in Canada that there doesn’t need to be someone doing both, even though it’s certainly doable.

But in the end, I think the weeks leading up to the Olympics you want people focused on working with their team (not splitting time between two teams and two formats), and want everyone aligned on the same travel schedule, etc.

Gushue and Jones winning knocks 3 of the top mixed teams (Jones/Laing, Peterman/Gallant, Gushue/Einarson) out.

Epping is also going to need a new partner to replace Weagle. It will be interesting to see who steps into these four pre-qualified spots. Einarson will need a male curler and Epping, Laing will need a female. I guess Peterman/Gallant will just relinquish their slot, leaving an opening for another team in the wings.
A few teams in the standings are knocking at the door to qualify: Val Sweeting/Marc Kennedy, Laura Walker/Kirk Muyres, Ashley Quick/Mike Armstrong, Jolene Campbell/Matt Dunstone, Clancy Grandy/Patrick Janssen
I like Grandy/Janssen for making the playoffs. They have won a LOT of events this season.

First I'd heard, during That Curling Show. Lisa Weagle has been cleared to curl in the Mixed Doubles trials with John Epping. So, they have created some grey area where 5ths can possibly represent the country in both disciplines. Thin edge of the wedge.

I was hoping that they'd make that exception for fifths! This is great news for Weagle and Epping!

That said, I don't think they'll win. My prediction is that it'll either be Sahaidak/Lott or Homan/Morris.

//edit: Walker/Muyres would also be great. Maybe with Muyres doing double duty as fifth for Gushue.

Jacobs will replace Gushue, teaming up with Einarson - current Canadian MD Champ, at the MD Oly Trials starting Dec 28 in PlaP MB.

The Brantford Mixed Doubles Cash spiels isn't just for the cash - the final qualifiers for the MD Olympic Curling Trials will come out of this event. There is lots at stake. Lots of pre-qualified teams are playing for the cash - and practice - so I predict a count-back to see who gets the berths. First playoff qualifiers tonight, the rest tomorrow - playoffs Sunday. Any video from this event?

Oops. Battle of the spouses tonight for the first play off qualifiers. McDonald /Walker vs Walker/Meyers. I was surprised to see Martin/Griffiths knocked into B by St-Georges*/Assellin - but no. (aka Team Bobébé https://twitter.com/TBobebe) I think Geoff Walker is the only Olympian in the play off qualifiers at this point. I really like Sahaidak/Lott - and the growth of the MD specialists. Has anybody found any video for this event yet?

*Thanks for the punctuation feedback.

I honestly don't understand how that works, or if there's any actual difference, and I know you don't mean harm by it, but I think now that a certain annoying poster has been kicked off the site, we should start referring to curlers by their actual names now (as best as we can, mistakes are forgivable).

I don't know if there's any video from this event. I checked Team Epping's Facebook page (because they have done some low budget streaming for Weagle/Epping games in the past), but didn't see anything.

CurlONTV has Kitz/Stewart vs Campbell/Scharback quarterfinals right now. Familiar-sounding commentators (Richard Hart? Danielle Inglis? I caught it late, so not 100% confirmed).

Just in time for the last shot. Any idea if it’s the same link for the semis?

It won't be exact same link, but it'll be on that YouTube channel, probably. Commentator also mentioned CBC Gem, but I'm not Canadian so I'm not familiar with that.

So, from looking at the standings before this event, I thought Griffith/Martin had enough points to be qualified for the trials based on CTRS* points alone (not sure). They played a lot and won a lot and are near the top in points. That leaves the other three playing for the two event berths. (The real prizes here.) St-Georges/Asselin, Campbell/Scharback, Carey/Hodgson. QC/SK/MB

*I guess that's CMDS points - my acronym laziness. Thanks CClips. You got the gist - I think they are in.

CMDR and CTRS are technically two different rankings, for two completely different disciplines of curling.
