Thanks to those provinces that shut down playdowns and did what Curling Canada still refuses to do.
Curl On has kept the number of registrations a secret. Just made the announcement. Would be interesting to know how man teams actually registered.

Exactly. Koe for example was at last year's Brier as Team Canada so if Alberta cancels playdowns he would be out. They won't allow that. JJones is in as Manitoba runner up last year since Einarson is now Canada so Tracy Fleury who Jones beat in WC playin will get in. Howard lost WC playin but he will in because a)he's a big name and b)CC are Ontario.
Most interesting might be Sask where Silvernagle's team is not together.

Saskatchewan appears bound and determined to have some sort of play down. Whether they ro or hy selection its a safe bet Dunstable will he the rep and if by some way he's not cc will get him there. The woman are a toss up between silvernagle, Holland and Howard.

The more interesting for me are actually Alberta and Quebec.alberta because of the unreal depth. Koe and bottcher are both strong and names cc will want there but Harty and sturmay are young and rising fast and could be fun to watch. Then there's wild cards like the returned Thomas . Quebec ..its not really depth but more a case of having 2 very good young teams in roberge and st.gorges that just missed out last year. Would they send them or last years Champs. I can't see Quebec having a playdowns

Then there's the question of what the north will do. Will they even field teams

Only Hunkin from last year is still on the team, Streifel is new 3rd I think Lawton is not playing this year.

Thumbs up The old fashioned way, they EARN it

I'm not sure I like the idea of CC "gifting " spots to teams that don't EARN their way there. I totally understand provinces cancelling playoffs due to covid and sending last year's winners who EARNED it. But giving free slots to popular teams that did not is troubling. That may help in the ratings, which proves that this whole charade is all about the almighty dollar, damned the health concerns. I do hate to be negative and cynical, BUT, why bother with this at all, other than for the money?

I agree Fresca, its becoming a slam. There is the rumor that CC wants to turn the canada cup into the national championship, which tells you all you need to know about the direction things are going.

Yes the forseeable future of curling is half a dozen top men's and women's teams dominating all events like it is now.
Even junior curling is going that way. In MB if you are decent curler you don't play with your friends at the neighborhood club, you go to one of the 2-3 clubs who have premiere junior program and get put on a potential super team. This is going to hurt in the long run as the middling curlers will drop out and never become dues paying club curlers who are THE most important part of curling.
I personally am finding the same names playing in the quarter, semi and finals of every bonspiel to be boring which is why the Brier and Scotties are more interesting. Sure you can pick the standings pretty much before the event begins but at least along the way there is the odd upset and near upset to make things interesting.

I feel bad for Tardi. They had a good chance last year but now have no chance this year. Played well at Kelowna and Penticton. Too bad they are probably done for the season.

you dont think theres any chance BC send them as their reps to the brier?

on a side note it must be nice to be one of the chosen ones like mcewen and koe or bottcher and know that , even in the event your province does not chose to send you this year CC has your back and will likely insert you into the event anyway

I suspect there will be no play in and CC will give spots to the top pros, Koe, Howard, McEwen. Fleury on the women's side plus teams from AB and Ont.

it doesnt really matter. even in a bubble things can go wrong easily. the risk they would be taking playing provincials is the same they are taking playing in a bubble. even if its reduced the risk is still there. in other sports that did the bubble thing there have still been cases sneak in.

yeah, i'd agree with these picks. i imagine that Casey Scheidegger would be added in as well. through "wildcard" spot. Chelsea Carey likely would be too if she had a team. Id love to see Tardi or someone young get put in but he's not a top team yet

"Gifted"

I'm sorry but again I totally disagree "Giving" free admittance to the Scotties and Brier to popular professional teams. This year is a one-off. Only the teams that have earned or won their way deserve to go. With the pandemic only getting worse, wouldn't it make much better sense to limit the teams instead adding extra token teams to increase the chance of infection? OK I'll stop right there because the CC dollar signs are flashing.

If the provinces can't hold their provincial play downs I have no problem letting last year's winner go. But to GIVE free invites based on popularity, not winning their way in is road best not travelled. Just a matter of time before it's no longer called the Tim Horton's Brier but the Tim Horton's slam.

ENOUGH.

i fully agree with you. but its all about the money for curling canada. the more top teams they can get in to this the better. for them.

Exactly, the $$$ talks. CC's understanding of curling has always been questionable, from trying allstar teams for olympic qualifiers to making rules forcing teams to dump a 5th and take on a CC sponsored coach like Homan had to in 2018.
What they don't understand is what the Brier and Scotties means to the Canadian curling fans. The pros talk about how the slams are the greatest because it's best on best almost every game and they are correct, they are the greatest for them. But the ratings for the slams are nowhere near the Brier and Scotties. If Koe was playing Gushue in a final for a million dollars I may or may not be watching but if NB is playing BC in a Scotties round robin I am.
The interesting part will be how CC justifies the extra teams, they will mention everything but the cash.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to the bull**** reasoning myself. Should be a good one.v8f anything you'd think they'd want to reduce the number of teams competing

More BS in NS as last years runner up in the NS Scotties is not being considered - Colleen Jones did not receive the invite as Jill Brothers did better in the 3 events she played in this very short season...AB is watching closely...no decision yet!
